Was it the leash? Or was it that Bill's "I'm too old to deal with thugs" attitude really got in the way?
We drafted what appeared to be some fine young men in Julius, Newman, Ware, Burnett, etc. All guys who were solid citizens and reportedly high character players in the draft analyses. Sounds like the chemistry experiment didn't go as well as it should have.
For me the leash began with his proclamation of no stars. He was going to be the "face of the franchise." Every time a player began to shine, his duties and game plan got just a little tighter.
He did a great job of assembling a talented team. I have never said otherwise. Not once. The coaching job he did leaves me flat. I'm not impressed.
Have you read the comments by Spags lately regarding Payton and Zimmer? You can't read them and not see a leash. Have you read the comments by Newman after the Lions loss? Owens after he stepped down? What about the comments by Kitna and Furrey of no adjustments made by the Cowboys? If you don't see the leash then you don't want to.
Which is cool if that's your thing. It isn't mine. I don't care who he is or how good a team he assembled, it fell short of my expectations. I won't apologize for having high expectations. Ever. No one will ever classify me as a lovable loser. I hate losing.
Speaking of losing, how about this fact. After Thanksgiving 2-3 for 4 straight years and more points given up by the defense each year despite a focus on the defense each off season he was here? That's good enough for you Ab? You didn't hear the players asking for the reins not to be pulled so tight these last 2 years? Why not? Bledsoe asked before the Philly game last year. Practically begged. Look at the results. Next game, back to the old ways. Indianapolis game this year look at how the defense went after Manning. After that, back to vanilla.
No leash? I guess if you're an ostrich.
