Next Man Up: Nate Thomas

https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/next-man-up-don-t-count-on-nate-thomas-in-ot-mix

"Drafted with an extensive injury history, Thomas possessed the athletic ability of a Day 2 (second- or third-round) pick, but too many medical concerns caused him to slide deep into the draft. Still, the Cowboys took a chance on him, and Thomas spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve. This past season, he was healthy enough to play in all 17 games, including four starts"

I did not know this, or maybe just forgot about it.
I do remember them saying he could have been drafted higher. But passed it off as their typical, we got great value excuse.
He needs to want it and could take LT. Move Guyton to RT and make Aluminum the swing tackle.

Is this the revival of hope that Thomas is going to be a starter.

He’s a tough one for me to figure out.

Initially I was surprised by how solid he looked, but then there was one particular game where he was giving me Chaz Green flashbacks!

:omg:

I’m not sure what to think about him at this point.
I honestly think he skill set translates best to RT. I say have him focus on that and see if him or Cornelius can replace Steele in 2027

Yeah I don't either. That's kind of our tackle room altogether.

I don't think Steele is bad as people think he is. I think you can get away with his level of play as a right tackle.

Guyton scares me because I think the talent is there I just don't know if the mental is and I don't know if he's capable of getting stronger with his physique. He looks like a tall lanky basketball player.

Then there's Nate Thomas and yeah I thought he looked solid at times last year but then he showed signs of a rookie which I believe he was last year. There's at least potential there.

I liked Asim Richards but they clearly didn't for some reason.
Thomas was a 2nd year guy, but he was on IR as a rookie. So pretty much an unofficial rookie. I dont think IR guys can practice with team

His play late in the season was horrific. Depending on him in any regard is personnel malpractice.

Didn’t they try to play him on the right side at some point and he really struggled? Or am I misremembering that?

The Dallas Cowboys have the worst tackle tandems in the league. Steele can't play and Guyton doesn't want to.

This is an absolute must. Guyton at best is a RT. Let he and Steele compete for that spot and draft a new T.
They have extended Steele. Does that indicate he's gone

I wouldn't give up on the current OT quite yet.

I remember hearing about the need for Guyton to be developed to some degree. I also think they threw him in there and he wasn't quite prepared.

There is still some point where Guyton might hit the switch and turn things around. i've seen it happen for other players as late as their 4th or 5th season.....prior to the salary cap, however.

These days, the NFL tams requite college players to transition more quickly but not every player has the ability to do that.

Still, Guyton is at the point where he continues to learn and improve if he can manage to stay healthy.

I'm also interested in how 5th round pick, OT Ajani Cornelius is coming along.

I don't think Steele has been completely healthy for two seasons. More familiarity with the rest of the young O-line, particularly Booker, should improve his performance.

Yes, some snaps against AZ. However he prepped for LT all offseason. If he preps for RT, I think he will be very good

We did next man up with him before and he was bad. He was a pet cat of many when he was jsut a bench player and then when pressed into service, the results were not good. Maybe the next time he is needed, he’ll be able to answer the call

What makes you think Guyton can stay healthy enough to start at RT?

Nate Thomas absolutely sucks. Finished the 2025 season with a 39.2 Overall PFF Grade (31.6 Pass Block Grade; 52.9 Run Block Grade).

I usually think on similar lines as you but not here. Steele is hot garbage in pass pro. We can live with his run blocking as that is still pretty good but good teams exploit Steele. I am ready to move on from him. We wont and probably cant but Id at least make him fight it out with Thomas. Id also draft another OT. Guyton also is nearing bust label
