This.

You want to build a consistent year to year playoff competitor?

This is a prime ingredient of the winning recipe.

I don't think the key to winning is stockpiling compensation picks but it's the cause of all those comp picks that is key. The only reason you have those picks is because you lost good, home grown, players in FA because you didn't overspend on those players. Instead, you look to replace them where you got them to begin with. In the draft.

The teams with the most comp picks are teams that build through the draft. That is the key to winning in the NFL. Well that and finding the franchise QB unicorn.

love those fanciful QB unicorns.....oh how rare they are.....unfortunately, we have basically wasted our current one by surrounding him with goblins and trolls on the OL for the first half of his career, and also on defense for most of his career.

There's still time. Elway didn't win a Super Bowl until the twilight of his career.

We definitely wasted most of Romo's career. No question about it. Who knows when we'll find another QB of the same caliber. It's not a given that it's happening anytime soon. He's elite and has been for a number of years now.

One estimate is a 4th and two 6ths if Hardy is really suspended for 10 games. That probably becomes a 5th and two 6ths if Hardy's suspension is reduced.

The oddest thing about the comp picks is that it does not seem to matter if it is a 1-year contract or multi-year contract, only the yearly average is significant (if these estimates are correct).

only this year matters.
if someone pays hardy a lot to leave he'll count in our favor for comp picks then.

it's a yearly tabulation which does make sense imho.

It would basically delay the 3rd/4th round pick for Murray leaving by a year

Green Bay didn't sign any qualifying free agents this offseason? Also notice all of the "good" teams are the ones with the most picks lined up (Broncos, Seahawks, Patriots, us, Ravens, Detroit, and GB and SF (only 3 each but a 4th and 5th in there)... we must be doing something right :)

yup. draft well and ... we give you more free draft picks.

draft well and manage the cap and it is a big advantage.

i also think you see teams move to a model of every other year FA accumulation.

dallas added guys like corey white and keith rivers likely because they had no impact on comp picks.

Good point. I'm sure whether or not a signing would affect comp picks was definitely taken into consideration when deciding what kind of contracts to give out. Moreso than previous offseasons it feels like.

timing leads me to believe that.
we signed those guys with no comp value first almost like they were targets.

hardy was at the very end of our signings.

i do think the team looked at murray as X amount of money in cap hit OR a comp pick and cap savings.

being able to get hardy changed that but still allowed a pretty good overall haul.

The thing is we have been doing this for a while. We are tied for second all time with the Packers for the most comp picks, only trailing the Ravens.

I thought we panicked a little with the Brinkley and Gachkar signings before we got McClain re-signed. I think one or both get released before the season starts.

Getting 4 more picks next year would be like stealing after the offseason and draft went so well.

I would be surprised if Brinkley/Gachkar get released.

I think they plan as if Lee and McClain will definitely miss games.

They probably keep 7.

Lee
McClain
Hitchens
Rookie 4th rounder
Brinkley
Gachkar

Wilber, Rivers, Rookie 7th for the 7th spot.

I didn't realize they gave Brinkley 2m guaranteed and Gachkar 1.2m.

They would lose space cutting Brinkley and only gain 400k by cutting Gachkar, so it would essentially be 0 after replacing him on the 53.

Those guys aren't worth losing a comp pick over, but at the time McClain wasn't signed and Wilson wasn't drafted.
