Wow. You went out on a limb there. :laugh2: Jerry is the master of "trading down".

Mays? I hope not... Roy L. Williams part 2.
Except Roy's first few years in the league he was an elite safety. I don't see Mays being elite at all.

Yeah but remember Roy had the great Darren Woodson playing beside him taking a lot of the load off him. But Roy had a couple of pretty special years at the beginning of his career.

I had a chance to visit with owner Jerry Jones on ESPN 103.3 in Dallas-Fort Worth on Tuesday and he made it pretty clear that he's not feeling pressure to fill any certain positions. In some ways, the Cowboys will be rolling out two draft classes in 2010. The '09 class was taken out by a wide variety of injuries, so Jones is anxious to see how some of those players respond. Jones didn't confirm this, but I've been told that the scouting department is taking a long look at the safety position with the No. 27 pick overall. The organization is disappointed in the play of Ken Hamlin and it's time to start looking for his eventual replacement. Alan Ball has looked good at times, but I'm not sure he's ready for full-time duty. The Cowboys also would like to add depth along the offensive line. Doug Free emerged as a solid contributor in '09, but the team needs to continue drafting and developing young linemen. I'm not sure where the Cowboys will find a place-kicker, but it's certainly a major need. In fact, it's probably their biggest need heading into the 2010 season.

Sounds pretty interesting since most guys here believe we are drafting an OL with the first pick. I tend to agree with the crowd that wants a playmaking safety. Hamlin has been unimpressive the last two seasons and if this D could generate more takeaways and give the O shorter fields our scoring stats will be higher. Sensabaugh has got speed/cover skills IMO and did well overall this year despite the Minny game. Let's also not forget that he played with a cast this season that cost him a few picks, played in a new defensive scheme, and with new DB/secondary coach.

I also have a feeling that Jerry might do a trade in the draft.

If the Cowboys don't go OL in the first, safety would sure be where I'd want them to be looking... the talent and the need are both there at that point...

Unless Earl T is at 27(or where ever if we move up) i won't agree with anything accept an OLineman with the 1st. We need someone to replace Flozell, then in the 2nd we can look at a saftey, then ILB, DE, WR, CB, and finally(but maybe most importantly) the Kicker Lawrence or Tiffin.

We could only hope ..... 4 years of elite safety play would be worth the 27 overall pick.

In my opinion.

Here's the scouting report on Allen:

Very good student. Sets the defense on the field. Loves the game; works hard on and off the field to improve.

I like this guy. Maybe #27 is too early for him, but I wouldn't touch Mays at that spot. If it came down to it, I'd take Allen over Mays. Mays makes absolutely zero plays. Put a ballhawk like Allen back there and this defense reaches an elite level.

Elite safety play? Roy Williams was dirty and he ruined the game, the fact that he will most likely leave the league with no one giving a **** proves that there may actually be a football god! As soon as he couldn't do his little horse collar he couldn't play anymore.

I want a playmaker at safety as much as anyone, but if they take one at number 27, that guy better be better than "good."

I haven't really started looking at prospects yet, so I don't know who's out there, but if they aren't at least somewhat confident that they can get someone who they think might become elite at that spot, then I'd rather they not take a safety with the 27th pick.

Basically, does the guy look like he has a good chance to become elite? Did a top talent at the position slip to us at number 27? Fine, take him. Not quite sure? Forget it.

It amazes me how many "new posters" act and think like this.

Mosley didn't say that he (or maybe it was Galloway) asked Jerry what position they would be taking in the first and he said he couldn't possibly know that at this point because the players aren't even all graded and ranked yet. Like Jerry said, we haven't even had the combine yet.

This defense was one of the best in the NFL last year. To act like any player on it was terrible -- including Hamlin -- is pretty silly.

Yup. Mosley completely reached there.

Jones said they had graded all the seniors but none of the underclassmen and that we would keep Austin (he said this about 20 times) but that's about all he said.

There's a lot of talk of dumping Hamlin but I disagree with Mosley and others who argue we look safety at 27.

The team likes Alan Ball as a 3rd safety and they like Mike Hamlin a lot. I don't think they go safety at 27 unless someone they like drops pretty far to them.

No need... the majority will have you on ignore after that first nonsensical blast.

RW31 really deteriorated but Ronnie Lott did the same things and made the Hall of Fame. It's a shame the league decided to destroy defensive headhunters. all so classy offensive leaders of men like T.O. could mock the defense from the end zone.

Draft philosophy will be pretty simple (and Jerry has spoken to this many times).....Dallas is taking best "playmaker" available at 27. Could be Safety or WR or even RB. 2nd and 3rd round picks will target OL.

i have to admit, WR would surprise me a bit. not because we couldn't use another playmaker at that position, but i think after investing what jj did in r williams and (soon to be) austin, i don't see him spending 1st round money on another wideout. of course it could happen, but i think the probability is fairly low.

i think the odds at rb are low as well, unless we're trading choice and/or cutting barber or something.
