ruined? he wasnt any good to begin with

I never saw what people were clamoring about over him...he came out of a gimmick offense, played against awful competition and wasnt very accurate to begin with

he was a terrible #1 overall pick...I'm glad they took him, hope they keep him for 5 or 6 more years

David

You don't know what your talking about. That's fine. If you choose to believe this then more power to you. He was never an inaccurate QB. He played in what you call a gimmick offense at Utah but that same offense has produced Tebow. We will see how he does when he comes out.

oh come on ABQ...its true...other than a few games last yr he has looked hopeless since the day he set foot out there...

and Tebow is not going to be a good NFL QB either, if he even gets a chance to play QB in this league

and he is very inaccurate (career just over 54%) and was barely above 50% his 1st r, below 50% this yr...he stinks

my friend and I went to see them play this past weekend. the tickets were free. The 49ers are absoutely terrible. It was so bad that we left at halftime and went back to the parking lot to throw back a few. They could be worse than the Dolphins.

He was a 65% passer while at Utah. When he came into the NFL, he was thrown into action in his rookie year and played with little to know talent. He ran for his life most of that first season. Fast foreward to this year and not much has changed. This is a very mobile guy we're talking about here. In his only year with a good OC/QB coach, he improved dramatically. Now, playing the whole season injured, he sucks. OK, whatever. The guy has had little to no chance in his career thus far. You point out that he was 50% his first year, 50% this year but fail to mention he was 58% last year. The best thing would be for him to move on. Chicago might be a real good place for him.

As for Tebow, I don't know how you can know that he is not going to play on Sunday when he is only a Freshman now and has just won the Heisman. That's a bit of a stretch.

Young QBs need to have the opportunity to sit and learn. May I remind you that you thought Parcells had totally miss handled our QB situation a few years ago and wanted him gone. Patients is what is/was needed with Smith. SF had none and now he sucks right? OK Dave.

It's your story, you tell it.

Smith was very mobile in college. He played in a spread offense. Vince Young played in a spread offense and so does Tim Tebow. He's not the runner that those two are, but it shows you that a qb has to be able to run to play in that type of offense. He ran for 631 yards in his last season at Utah and had over a 1,000 yards for his career.

Also, Tebow is a sophomore.

Your right, Tebow is a Soph. My mistake and thank you for pointing that out.

Tebow is a soph. not a freshman...I see him play every week here in SEC country...I can watch him throw the ball and tell he isnt going to be an NFL QB...just like I can look a Alex Smith and tell he isnt very good...and please dont try and tell em you are going to use the Heisman as an indicator of NFL success

you can quote all the numbers from Utah you want, but college stats, especially those run up in gimmicky offenses like the spread option are basically worthless...I can go get numbers on every QB thats played in a run and shoot system and quote those too cant I? They will absolutely awesome numbers too, and what happened to those guys in the NFL?

and I did miss badly on Drew Henson...unfortunately he pursued baseball first and never worked out here or anywhere else he's been since...he obviously had a fundamental flaw he couldnt overcome, just like Smith does

I also was wrong about Romo...I honestly thought Romo made too many mistakes, didnt throw with enough accuracy and that his previous level of competition would hurt him in the long run...he's obviously proven us all wrong..still the difference between Romo and somebody like Smith is Romo has always had a really quick release and made quick decisions, whereas a guy like Smith doesnt seem to know where to go with the ball quick enough and once he does decide where to go, he has problems delivering passes to a receiver in stride

Smith is a horrible QB. He might be worse than Vince Young, which is saying something. Junior QBs should as a rule, never be drafted if they've started less than 24 games, I think it is (Could be wrong on the exact number, but it applies to guys like Harrington, Smith, Akili Smith and others). The failure rate is astronomical.

But, in this article, Nolan comes across as a real jerk. Of course, we're really only getting Smith's POV from this article.

Yes, Alex Smith is a mobile guy. I don't know why someone mentioned that he wasn't. Certainly mobile enough to be in a West Coast offensive system. More mobile than his back up Trent Dilfer. He needs some work, but he is also very young. He is only in his 3rd season and is only 23 years old. I did not think he was worth a #1 over all pick, but that is what you sometimes have to do to get your QB.

I don't think the 49ers would have been better off with Aaron Rodgers. People talk about Smith coming from a gimmiky offense that did not prepare him for the NFL. Well Rodgers played for Jeff Tedford and many of the QBs that played college ball for him have done poorly in the NFL. We have not seen enough of Rodgers to know what type of NFL QB he truly will become. I don't think his short stint against Dallas says too much. The Cowboys defense obviously let up in that game.

And somehow we have another thread by the 50,000 watt mumbler from Farmers Branch about TO allegedly pouting from a video clip, which is largely conjecture.

Versus this, which is more concrete and newsworthy by far.

From what I've seen of A. Smith, I'm not impressed with his plays. Dude just looks like lost on the field, I don't see much of upside with this guy.

I thought Smith was going the way of the bust pick, but last year gave me pause. He might have some promise, but he really would need a better situation to realize it.

What Nolan's doing, though, is throwing Smith under the bus, pointing, laughing, and calling him a wuss in front of his teammates for complaining about how much it hurts. He's posturing to save his own job by scapegoating the QB. It's pretty transparent, and it's probably not going to work.

The 49ers made a franchise-sized mistake when they drafted Smith instead of Aaron Rogers. Look at the 3 QBs SF had from '79 to '04: Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia. They are all good passers, yet very mobile, and throw well on the run. Alex Smith is a pure pocket passer, period. The 9ers really didn't have the organization to switch from the WCO to the timing based O. Getting Norv Turner in there was a big help, but they let him get away to SD. They have the makings of a huge mess for many years to come...

Aaron Rodgers sucks too.

David, there is no logical way any sane person can determin if Smith is or will be any good at this point. He has not had the time, nor the opportunity to develop into anything. This is the whole point.

So now we are full circle. You believe what you wish. I do not share your opinion on this.

If you have the physical and mental tools, it does not matter where you went to college or what system you played in. Ken Anderson went to Div3 Augustana; Terry Bradshaw certainly did not play against the big boys much; Tony Romo was in the minors as well. There are other examples of QBs from small schools making it big. it usually takes them longer, but they make it. Losing Norv really hurt, but the whole team went into the toilet this year. Was very disapointed in Nolan; his father was a real stand up guy who would NEVER treat one of his players like that. The fact that Smith needs surgery right there paints Nolan as a total liar.

Couldn't be happening to a better bunch. I have no sympathy for this team whatsoever. Their on my eternal, "no escape clause" **** list for life. Of course they've been "on the skids" for longer than Dallas (Dallas has the more recent SB win), but you'd never know it by listening to the media. In fact, the predictions for the Whiners "rise back to prominence" has gotten a ton more play and "below the radar" cheering and hoping as well in recent years. Now this.
Good.
I hope they go into utter chaos and go 1-15 next year. If you're "bringing up the rear" in that putrid division, you know your in NFL hell.
