NFL, Comcast Strike a Deal
The NFL and Comcast have reached a settlement resolving their long-running dispute.
The settlement includes a long-term agreement for the cable company to carry the league-owned television channel.
The two sides had been at odds over pricing and distribution of the NFL Network.
"We are delighted to have come to an agreement with the NFL," said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation. "Our goal has always been to provide our digital customers with access to the NFL's unique content and, working together, we have struck the right balance between value and distribution on a variety of viewing platforms. We are looking forward to bringing the NFL's programming to our customers just in time for the start of the NFL season."
"We are very pleased that NFL Network and other NFL content will be widely distributed in millions of more homes on Comcast's service," said National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We look forward to having NFL Network's coverage of training camps and the preseason showcased this summer on Comcast. NFL Network is the only TV channel devoted exclusively to football 24/7, 365 days a year."
According to an announcement by the NFL and Comcast, the NFL Network will be carried on a package making it available to two-thirds of digital customers.
The NFL previously had wanted its channel carried on Comcast's digital basic package. Comcast had maintained that the channel belonged on a sports tier so only those customers who wanted it had to pay for it.
Comcast also will carry the Red Zone Channel, with live action from Sunday games, according to the announcement.
The settlement comes as the NFL negotiates two-year extensions of its network TV deals with Fox and CBS. Those extensions will run through the 2013 season, according to sources.
I'm happy.
