NFL, Comcast Strike a Deal

The NFL and Comcast have reached a settlement resolving their long-running dispute.

The settlement includes a long-term agreement for the cable company to carry the league-owned television channel.
The two sides had been at odds over pricing and distribution of the NFL Network.

"We are delighted to have come to an agreement with the NFL," said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation. "Our goal has always been to provide our digital customers with access to the NFL's unique content and, working together, we have struck the right balance between value and distribution on a variety of viewing platforms. We are looking forward to bringing the NFL's programming to our customers just in time for the start of the NFL season."

"We are very pleased that NFL Network and other NFL content will be widely distributed in millions of more homes on Comcast's service," said National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We look forward to having NFL Network's coverage of training camps and the preseason showcased this summer on Comcast. NFL Network is the only TV channel devoted exclusively to football 24/7, 365 days a year."

According to an announcement by the NFL and Comcast, the NFL Network will be carried on a package making it available to two-thirds of digital customers.

The NFL previously had wanted its channel carried on Comcast's digital basic package. Comcast had maintained that the channel belonged on a sports tier so only those customers who wanted it had to pay for it.
Comcast also will carry the Red Zone Channel, with live action from Sunday games, according to the announcement.
The settlement comes as the NFL negotiates two-year extensions of its network TV deals with Fox and CBS. Those extensions will run through the 2013 season, according to sources.

I'm happy.

Now if they could just take the Sunday Ticket monopoly away from DirecTV...maybe the competition would bring down the outrageous price.

NFL, Comcast Deal Will Include “On Demand” Content
Posted by Mike Florio on May 19, 2009, 9:50 a.m.

The NFL has officially announced, via that dinosaur known as a “press release,” its agreement with Comcast.

The deal includes a feature not previously disclosed. Per the release, Comcast customers will now have access to a “robust suite of NFL content On Demand, including game highlights, game replays, the ‘best’ of NFL Films, players and coaches interviews, local team highlights, and other NFL programming whenever they want a piece of the action.”

But NFL Network still won’t appear on Comcast’s basic service package. Instead, NFLN will move from a current digital tier to the “Digital Classic” package, which will result in the content being available to two-thirds of all Comcast customers — a major upgrade over the current availability of NFLN.

The launch is scheduled to happen by August 1.

“We are very pleased that NFL Network and other NFL content will be widely distributed in millions of more homes on Comcast’s service,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “We look forward to having NFL Network’s coverage of training camps and the preseason showcased this summer on Comcast. NFL Network is the only TV channel devoted exclusively to football 24/7, 365 days a year.”

Comcast and the NFL also agreed to take immediate steps to discontinue all pending legal disputes between the two companies.

UPDATE: The deal also includes, as previously reported, the Red Zone Channel, when the Red Zone Channel becomes available. Under the new deal between the NFL and DirecTV, it will be available by 2011. Just in time for the work stoppage.

Yeap, when I had a dish it was terrible. I'd lose reception for no reason.
Sucks for you, I've only lost it once for about five minutes. Some people don't do what you're supposed to do to help your signal strength, those are you usually the ones who complain about it.

Signal strength in the early days was pretty poor. As they've launched more satellites and built better equipment, it would take a monsoon to knock it out.

Yeah, it's been as solid as it gets for me over the past five years.

I used to live in a high rainfall area ... and in very heavy cloud cover (I'm talking tornado-warning-like cloud cover), we lost our dish reception. Over the period of a year, it probably happened 10 to 12 times ... often 10 to 20 minute periods of intermittent reception. A couple of these periods happened during Cowboys games.

I now get my U.S. TV via a Slingbox that is hooked up to cable TV in Dallas. I hope that means I'll soon be able to get the NFL Network.

Good news everyone, instead of just an additional $5 sports tier package fee it has now changed to a $30 premier package.

Dish reception problems can also be attributed to the type of LNB. A Directv tech originally installed a Slimline 5-LNB. He came back about two more times to realign the dish. I would still lose my signal during a heavy thunderstorm. He replaced the 5-LNB for a 3-LNB during his last service call. I've experienced some signal lost during a bad storm on my HD channels, but it hasn't been bad at all and all of my SD channels come through without a hitch.

I can see if you have trees you cannot get rid of you are pretty much screwed. That and some condo or apartment owners that will not allow dishes to be put up. BUT that is a tiny fragment of the population. I left cable in Feb 1994 and have never ever regretted it.

What the french, toast! Digital Classic package is $20 more than the package we have now, minus the $5 we won't be paying for the sports tier, for a bottom line of $15 more a month.

***** in the A. Thanks Comcast.
