NFL Cap Hit in Void Years - Cowboys 16

The cap will grow every year. So it looks scary now but won’t be as bad each and every year. Philly maximizes value now and isn’t afraid to cut guys loose if they don’t play well. Dallas could easily do the same. But our FO is trash.
When I hear some fans say, “Yeah but the eagles will be in cap hell soon”, I can only think of what their front office is saying, “Yeah we will worry about that when we get through polishing our Lombardi.”

Stephen Jones worries about salary cap restrictions more than he does about taking chances with their piles of cash to win a Lombardi.

Put it this way- would I trade being in cap hell for 3 years in exchange for a Lombardi? In a heartbeat. SJ would not.

The biggest issue to me is it gives some teams an advantage over others. The cap was meant to create a level playing field. But some teams could pay all the upfront cash others can. Most teams are owned by the very rich but now all and not all rich people are cash rich. It also drives the escalation in salaries. If I owned a team I’d do it but for the overal league and the game they need to slowly rain it in. You couldn’t just all st once but limit those voidable years to maybe just 1 or 2. Put an amount of overal money into first half of contract. That could slow it down. But teams and agents will always look for loopholes holes and you can’t blame them. But sometimes you have to put the league above the team
The article did say that the NFL is looking at how Philthy handles the cap.

How do you know that for sure. The lakers are the most valuable franchise in the nba. The lakers owners(The Buss’),compared to other owners around the nba are some of the poorest
How do you know? Seriously? Are there really people who think Jerry is poor? Welcome to CZ.

No one is saying that Jerry is poor. There is a huge difference between being wealthy and having cash on hand though. The difference is most NFL owners have made money outside of football to help support their franchises. Jerry uses his franchise to support his other businesses. I think its fair to question if Jerry Jones has enough cash on hand to support an NFL franchise without help from revenue sharing. The lack of free agency spending along with August/September extensions make a good argument about that.

 There is no cash involved.

I don't see this. Please explain.

The way Philly has done it they have spread out option bonuses over the course of the contract which are prorated for 5 years which is why the have so much money in voidable years. Option bonuses paid in the last years of the contract are prorated beyond the end of the contract. In reality this is not much different than paying large salaries then restructuring to convert the salary into bonuses and pro-rating it. The only difference is the Eagles are pro-rating bonuses into voidable years. Other teams take the CAP hit during the contract term. Although this seems to be changing.

Look at Hurts's deal. His salary peaks at $1.4 million. But he is paid option bonuses every year till the end of his deal. The last 3 years of his contract he is due $150 million in bonuses. His signing bonus was less than $24 million. Dak's was $80 million.

The up front money is really no different than any other contracts where a signing bonus is paid.

Philly's use of voidable year is their choice. The downside is lots of dead money when players retire or are waived. Until recently, I think most teams wanted to avoid dead money but the Eagles chose to build an all-star roster, win a SB or 2 then take the down years. Keep in mind they won a SB in 2017-2018, then rebuilt their roster to win again in 2024-2025 after going 4-11-1 in 2020.

Is it worth it? Would you take 2 SB wins in 7 years over what Dallas is doing?
Ur painting of Philly's "2 superbowls" and then this desert of down years in between isn't accurate

Between their 2 Superbowls, they also went to a 3rd superbowl that they barely lost to the Refs errrrr I mean Chiefs. And then had another year where they started off 10-0 before falling apart.

They're kind of staying in legit SB contention all the dam time now. They're the favorites again this year.

I think what we can learn from them is that their GM us ALWAYS trying trying trying. Any little advantage he'll chase after. He'll sleep at the office and work a month straight on his team's strategy for the 7th round of the draft. EVERYTHING is an opportunity to him. He'll try anything...and often...keep the successes and quickly admit fault and cut the mistakes. No coasting. Even now, as he's recognized as the best GM in all sports with free reign from his owner, he's still fighting for every scrap of advantage can get.

We just can't touch that. Not with the buffoon we have running our clown show. It's like Bill Gates vs Piggly Wiggly.

No, keep up. Jerry paid him big time. Go look it up.
Yes, Jerry also paid him in August once league revenue sharing money hit. There is a reason Jerry wont sign guys to major contracts early in the offseason unless he absolutely has to. Its not about paying players, of course the Cowboys have funds to pay players, but Jerry doesn't have cash on hand to go get guys. Its why we dont go after free agents. Instead we go after trade targets so they wont get paid until the games start. We push off signing our own guys well into the end of summer. The timing of it all suggests that Jerry doesn't have the cash. He certainly has the assets to raise the cash, but doesnt want to sell those to do so.

More like Bill Gates and Steve Balmer

Yep. It’s also not a statement of Jerry being a pauper. It’s a statement that the owner of the Cowboys has other interests than the Cowboys and winning football games by bolstering talent isn’t what interests him anymore.

Absolutely. I'm assuming a lot here, but I think part of the reason Jerry likes owning the Cowboys is so that he can fund his other businesses. I'm sure he would like to win a championship at some point, but this is why his top priority is staying relevant.
