It used to be that when two NFC teams played FOX aired the game and when two AFC teams played CBS aired the game. If a NFC team played at a AFC team FOX had the game and if a AFC team played at a NFC team CBS had the game.

Now none of that is still written in stone. I notice a couple of games they broke from this last season but now there has been counting this week there's been 4 times already. This week the Cowboys at home against the giants is on CBS. This is good for me because I live in a NFC city that most of their games are noon games and on FOX.

My question is why have they strayed from the conference coverage by the networks?

Thursday night football on Fox caused Fox and CBS to make concessions for each other.

If they hadn't started this last season before FOX got Thursday Night Football that would make more sense, but Fox only started that this season. FOX starts this week and it's split 6-6 of games that would normally be on either network. Now this may have something to do with this but then again they started this last season. What was the reason for doing it last season?

Good thought though.

It's called cross-flexing and has occurred since 2014.

Here is an article that explains it a little.

They started it in 2014 to allow more competitive games to be aired in the late slot on Sunday.
Mostly CBS had bum AFC games, and no one cared to watch them.

So they started the flex scheduling to increase ratings.

Has nothing to do with TNF or FOX showing them. Simply a ratings thing for the NFL and the TV negotiating rights since they pay such huge money for the rights.

I think Romo is calling this game. It would be interesting to hear his take on this team.

Thanks for the link. I sure hope they don't go to that bid per game thing though. I have a way to watch games on cable stations but sometimes the box I have on my TV that I use none of the links for the game, Cowboys, won't or don't connect and then I have to go to my computer and watch it on my computer. I'd rather sit on my couch and watch then at my computer.

Fox has been doing Thursday night since 2018.

I don't know why but I just don't remember watching FOX on Thursday nights. I'm sure it's me because I did check and FOX did start in 2018. My bad.

I think it's more because like this year with the NFL channel doing the first 1/4 of the season before whatever network is doing it takes over. I've never understood why the NFL competes with the other networks that pay the NFL to televise games and gives up that income. The other thing is everyone can get FOX, CBS and NBC with just an antenna but not everyone can get the NFL channel because not everyone has cable or a dish. Yes those two have grown in numbers over the last couple of decades but because of costs there still are people that don't have either.

I'm still stupid enough to pay for NFL package. I have to seriously question that, here on out.

When I first got a dish I had a card reader/writer back when DirecTV used the H-cards and programed my card to get everything and had NST. Then they ran a blitz and fried all cards that weren't what they had as channels they showed for customers. A year later I moved to another city and got another dish when they ran a special of getting DirecTV and pay no installation fee and get 1 movie channel free for the first year. The NFL had their weekly highlight show and tyraining camp show on HBO then so I chose HBO. Then in the early summer the next year I got a call from DirecTV and they offered to give me NST for just $1 a month more than what I was paying so I took it. The next year if I wanted it they were going to charge me $175 for it. I turned it down thinking closer to the season they would offer a much better deal. They didn't so that ended that. The I got injured not at work and it was my own fault so I couldn't work for a while and so I had to stop my DirecTV and haven't had a dish or cable since.

I literally hate Thurs night football. The only games I’ve ever watched on Thurs are the Cowboys versions. Most of these games are poor matchups anyway. IMO, it is a cash grab by the owners with little concern for the players’ safety having to play on a 4 day week. These players need more than 4 days to recover from the car crash their body goes through in an NFL game each week.

It’s one of the many reasons I almost always side with the players in labor disputes. They are treated like well paid gladiators. And the argument that “they get paid a lot of money” falls short when you see guys suffering life altering side effects like Mike Webster, Dave Duerson, Junior Seau and many others too numerous to mention.

Yes pro football players are generally well compensated. But the avg player has a 4-5 year career making the most money they will probably ever make in their lives.

Because they want to be more diverse to the LGBT community.

They begun a few years ago. Reason being that the networks argued that on a given Sunday the better matchups favored one conference or another. And they wanted more access for their national broadcast.

But the old rule still holds serve for most games. But they can flex a game if they think there’s a better matchup for the national broadcast .

Much of what you said is true but what if these football players actually studied going back to high school and learned something and got degrees that they could use and have careers lasting 20, 30, 40 years. Some of them could even make more in the long run than what they made playing ball without the injuries or the risk of injury. I understand what you're saying but we all have to understand that they CHOSE to take the risks so I have little sympathy for them wanting to be treated with kid gloves. And they haven't helped their situation with me ever since they have, with the leagues blessing, doing all their social issues while on the clock. If goodell had any kahunas he would have put a stop to that the very first time kaperjerk took a knee the first time. We who are not pro athletes if we tried to pull those social things while on the clock we'd get fired.
