I don't think they are focused on Carr per se, but it's an example of the logic that good team use. You could use similar logic with WR Mike Evans. If he is available and is the overwhelming BPA, then they could draft him and not give Dez a new mega-contract. The 10M+ per year that would go to Dez could be used to sign the top free agent next off-season.

The Cowboys could have drafted LeSean McCoy in 2009 with their 2nd round pick. They had him rated as a 1st round pick but already had Felix and Barber. Their first two picks ended up being Robert Brewster and Jason Williams. It's a lesson in taking the Best Player Available.

In the recent past they've used 2nd and 3rd round picks to replace players the following year.
See TWill(Austin), Crawford(Spears), Murray(Fatty).

In round 1 they usually want to plug the guy in immediately.
If a CB like Desir is there in r3 I think he pencils in as a 2015 Carr replacement.

If given a choice between Barr and Donald I would probably take Barr. I think Donald is the better player right now, he;s explosive and has aced everything so far. The reason I take Barr is because he can play in any scheme. Donald is a perfect fit for our current defense but who knows how long we keep this defense? I think we stay with a 4-3 obviously but who knows about the DC and system changes that could come. I'm no expert but the real experts keep saying he can only play as effectively in this kind of scheme. Just what I've been hearing.

The other reason I lean toward Barr is the need at DE. We have Selvie there, the rest is unknown. We at least have Melton at DT and 1Ts (according to most people, including Rod) can be found later in the draft and we may have one already in McClain or Crawford, who knows. That being said, we'd be insanely lucky to have a choice.
