NFL.com: Face of the Franchise

I don't agree. If we're talking about an all time face of a franchise, it needs to be a name that's everyone associates with the team and a household name.

He is "Mr. Cowboy", our first draft pick, our first Hall of Famer. Heck yes he is the face of the franchise... of the players.

Personally, I would have gone with Landry but since Bob Lilly is the reason I am a Cowboys fan I'm OK with the choice. :D

Who came up with that list anyway? Pretty lame on some of them.

A childishly easy argument could be made for Tom Landry, but Bob Lilly is a solid and fully acceptable alternate in my book.

Yep. Bob Lilly — "Mr. Cowboy" — still stands the test of time as the "Face of the Franchise" ... so far, IMO. May a better, more deserving player rise up and replace him in Cowboys lore ... in the not too distant future. It'll take a truly impressive sort to do it.

personally i would go with landry. I think if you showed a younger fan a picture of Lilly and askef who it was a lot wouldn't know. But if you showed them landry they would.

Adam Rank, writer for NFL.com, made the list...and yes, I agree that some of them are pretty lame!

Personally, I would choose Staubach as the Face of the Cowboys' Franchise. ;) I don't disagree with everyone who chose Landry, but I believe all the rest are players rather than coaches.

You are correct, all players, so Lilly works for me! :starspin

They don't call him "Mr. Cowboy" for nothing.

btw, I'm a huge Landry fan, but a coach isn't the face of a team. If he is, your team doesn't have a face.

So Vince Lombardi can't be the face of the packers?

It's tough to say Bob Lilly over Staubach because I can tell you a lot of younger football fans of other teams won't bring up Lilly when talking about all time great Cowboys but they all know about Staubach and his legacy. Maybe it has to do with the positions they played and the attention that QBs get over Defensive Lineman, but Staubach is and always will be a household name among even casual football fans. I'm just not sure Lilly is, even though Cowboy fans recognize him as a top 5 player in franchise history.

Tough call and I guess it just depends on how you define "Face of the Franchise".

Exactly. As a younger Cowboys fan (26) I can assure you, nobody my age or younger would pick him as the face of the franchise. Most probably have never even heard of him. If you aren't a player who all generations of Cowboys fans think of, you aren't the face of the franchise. Period.

I guess you would have to define the term "face of the franchise" and I'm not quite sure what criteria Adam Rank used for his selections. He went with Don Hutson for the Packers even though he was out of the league before most fans' parents were born. Granted Hutson was selected on NFL Network as the greatest Packer of all time so I get why he chose him.

Then he went with Peyton Manning for the Colts instead of Johnny Unitas even though Unitas was the face of the League for a lot of years let alone the Colts.

His selection of Deion Sanders for the Falcons is truly baffling as Sanders only played 5 seasons in Atlanta. Granted, the Falcons don't exactly have a "storied past" like most other teams their age but Tommy Nobis, Claude Humphrey, Jeff Van Note, Steve Bartkowski, Jessie Tuggle, Keith Brooking, Mike Kenn would have all been better choices IMO.

Was Rank pandering to the younger fans with Manning and Sanders? There wasn't a whole lot of continuity in his selections.

By that criteria only the most recent of stars could be considered since a 12-year old fan has never seen Troy Aikman or Emmitt Smith play. They would go with Romo, Witten, or Ware.

Sorry to break it to you kid but these teams have been around a LOT longer than you have and to exclude the greatest players simply because some fans are too young to have seen them is ridiculous. Also, I'm more than twice your age and to me Bob Lilly has ALWAYS been "Mr. Cowboy".

If you "haven't even heard of him" then you should bone up on your team's history a bit more.
