Shanahan still has coaching in future
Posted: News | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Denver Broncos, Mike Shanahan, Pat Bowlen

A day after being fired as Broncos coach, Mike Shanahan said he wants to get back into coaching, maybe even this year if the right opportunity presents itself.

While he has not talked with any teams since his dismissal, Shanahan said he will return to coaching at some point, and will take the next couple of weeks to weigh his options. He doesn’t have a timetable for the next opportunity, but said it will be based on what situation gives him the best chance to win.

Shanahan had three years and upwards of $20 million remaining on his contract.

Just minutes after Broncos owner Pat Bowlen finished a news conference Wednesday (Video) regarding the decision to fire his longtime friend and coach, Shanahan took the podium, spending several minutes thanking current and former players and members of the organization.

Shanahan was upbeat, considering the circumstances, but began to break down early when speaking about his friendship with Bowlen.

“He will always be my friend,” said Shanahan. ”He’s the best owner in sports.”

Shanahan said he understood why Bowlen made the move.

“Sometimes you have to make a change that you think is best for your organization,” he said. “You either get it done or you don’t get it done. We haven’t gotten it done. We’re all judged by what you get done. … The expectationas are very high, and they should be. … The bottom line is it comes back to me. That’s how you’re evaluated.”

As the details surrounding the firing come to light, it’s now clear it was a total surprise on all fronts. Bowlen used the words “shocked” and “surprised” when describing Shanahan’s reaction to the news. Shanahan said he had no idea what his meeting with Bowlen — which took all of five minutes — was going to detail.

“I wasn’t sure,” said Shanahan. “Maybe lunch? Maybe my new restaurant that I have to promote since I have time now?”

Even in making his exit, Shanahan didn’t hide his affinity for Bowlen or the Broncos organization.

“This place will always be the tops in the NFL, because of the leadership,” he said.

Not with Dallas, though.

Ok so does Jerry do the back stroke or stay true to his words to Phillips.
I'm thinking the latter.

I think dbair is right. A lot will depend on whether Garrett does take a HC job.

I believe Jerry Jones was genuine when he emphatically stated that Wade Phillips would the Head Coach in 2009.

I don't think it mattered which Coach was available or not. I believe he really wants Jason Garrett to get the job, but he knows he isn't ready yet and the best chance to make that happen is to keep Wade Phillips around one more season.

Jason Garrett is not going anywhere. He will interview for the Detroit Lions job as a good faith gesture but just like he did with Sean Peyton and the Oakland Raiders, Jerry Jones will convince Jason Garrett to stay on another season.

Quite frankley, I doubt Jerry Jones has to convince him not to take the job anyway.

To add, Jason Garrett would be foolish to take the Detroit Lions job, unless he believes the Cowboys are a sinking ship.

I think Garrett is gone if he gets an offer...he's done the interview thing, he doesnt need the practice...if he's going to interview there (and other places, based on reports) its because he has an interest in leaving.

The issue then becomes the timing. Does Garrett get a job soon enough to leave us with quality options, or would Jones just bite the bullet and keep Wade regardless.

Personally I think if Garrett goes, Wade will get fired.

I still don't believe, even if Garrett does leave for a head coaching job, that Jerry is firing Wade and bringing in anyone.

Let him take a breather for a year and just be our "offensive consultant."

I think there's merit to what you're saying.

I don’t agree. I think Jason Garrett has the personality to win over any owner and will get offered a HC job. The Detroit job is a perfect start, no way you can do worse than 0-16. Only can get better.

I say Hire Shanahan, i like him and think he would be a good fit for the offense. I think the D-fense is in place anyone can coach up this group.

I think many forget this is also about entertainment. I do not want to see any more of Wade and what he brings. I am tired of the Cowboys being the laughing stock of the league.

I disagree.

He is being paid better than some Head Coaches and really doesn't have much competition in front of him for Head Coach of one of the most famous franchise in sports

This is a once in a life time opportunity and he is extremely close.

No way he dumps this job to go to the Detroit Lions.

Also, Jerry Jones will not go back on his word. He was on the radio a few days ago and he even stated that he regrets firing Chan Gailey after 2 years.

No, Jerry Jones will not cowtow to the media and fans, he will go down fighting with Wade Phillips.

I know most will disagree, but I would be a little disappointed to see him fire Wade Phillips right after he spent the prior week stating passionately that he was gone.

I know things change and business is business but I don't think Jerry Jones has the reputation for going back on his word.

How much cash do you think Detroit will offer? I mean JJ paid this boy huge.

yeah, but he may be tired of the circus...and who could blame him?

We'll see I guess...

No way he dumps this job to go to the Detroit Lions.

Your assuming Detroit is the only option he'll have. He's supposedly on short lists in Cleveland and St Louis too.

Also, Jerry Jones will not go back on his word. He was on the radio a few days ago and he even stated that he regrets firing Chan Gailey after 2 years.

he may say that, but this team wasnt going anywhere but down the toilet with Gailey. This situation is totally different as well. If one of his reasons for keeping Wade is because he wants Garrett to eventually be HC here, but then Garrett leaves...well, you do the math

thats another one we'll see on

again while I do see the argument against it, several things that are changing may change is tune. He didnt know Garrett might be a candidate to leave, he didnt know Shanahan would become available.

I know things change and business is business but I don't think Jerry Jones has the reputation for going back on his word.

thats true, but if the ultimate plan is to install Garrett as HC here, but Garrett leaves, then things are dramatically different.

And why would he? Wade makes the perfect puppet! Jerry knows he has turned the Cowboys franchise into the most valuable in all of professional sports. To him, this validates that he is doing things the right way and he'll be darned if he's going to relinquish any level of control.

We'll see -- I, for one, am so far off the Wade Phillip's bandwagon, it would take a passport to get back on. I just made that up! Pretty clever, huh? :laugh2:

Dave first all, I am not trying to be funny or demean you but what are you pushing when you quote people? Somehow, when you press the Quote button the Scripting Language is getting messed up :D .

Yes, I agree. I stated in another thread that if he feels the Cowboys are a sinking ship, he may leave.

You make a very strong point about no reason to keep Wade Phillips if Jerry Jones wants Jason Garrett, but he leaves. However, I just don't see Jerry Jones going back on his word. Some disagree, but I really think Jerry Jones is doing this mainly because of Jason Garrett but out of stubborness.

I really do hope we can get Mike Shanahan and Wade Phillips gets his walking papers, I just don't see it happening.

Yes, but some reason one of the "/QUOTE" tags are missing. I haven't been able to figure out why, but that is what is happening when you quote.

See how my post has the "QUOTE=dbair1967;2545134" on it? That is only showing up because there is a "/QUOTE" tag missing.

I had to remove the brackets because the software is picking up the tags.

I have no idea...I see other posts that look like it alot though...I just highlight what I want in it and click that "wrap tags around text" button up top...and this is what comes out

For the record, I don't believe this either. Its more justification for what he knows is an incredibly unpopular decision. He's never once stated the slightest ounce of regret for firing Gailey, and now suddenly 10 years later he comes out with a convenient mea culpa that backs up this nonsense?

Uh uh, not buying.
