NFL.com's Baldinger Mock: Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi to Big D

A question for you draft gurus: How does Carimi compare to Jake Long taken 1st overall a couple of years ago?

I know Long is very solid, but he's NO Joe Thomas. How do they both compare as they were coming out?

Joe Thomas was a top flight pass protector, but when it comes to run blocking, Joe Thomas is no Jake Long.

Carimi is more Jake Long than Joe Thomas, although obviously not on the same level as a prospect.

So he is best suited at RT?

Sorry, but NFL teams dont draft RTs in the top 10 (at least not on purpose).

That would be a monumentally stupid pick. Seriously, drafting a RT in the top 10...........wow.

Andre Smith and Anthony Davis.

I dont care where hes projected to go if we can get an immediate starter at any position I will be happy with whoever we take at the 9th pick.

I think Carimi will be a monster at right tackle. Best run blocker in the draft.

there are about 3 OTs to take at this point--I'd take the meanest one (not sure who that is, but if were my choice, I'd find out)
I'd say it's Carimi based on what I've seen thus far.

I would LOVE this pick.

Dude is for real, and a legit baller. We need players like him on our Oline. He will be ready to play.

We should probably look toward making sure we're filling holes rather than whether other teams will consider our picks "reaches."

Why do we have to do what everyone else does?

I just hope we draft to our draft board. If it says Carimi then so be it, take him.

I could care less if some draft guru says it's a reach. Stick to the board.

If Carimi's our guy (doubtful), then for God's sake trade down. No one has a pure RT rated as the 9th best player in the draft.

No way Carimi is the BPA at #9.

Because he's an offensive linemen? Because he will most likely be on the field for near 100% of our offensive snaps?

I watched him for nearly ever game this season. He is worthy of a top-ten pick.

No he's not.

what about jacksonville taking tyson alualu with the tenth pick last year? Lots of people poked fun at the pick and were shocked but the jaguars wanted him and he made the all rookie team.

I dont think I've seen so much black and white on a 1st round prospect this year.

Either he's a top ten pick worthy of drafting, or he's at best a late first round pick that we probably shouldn't draft anyways.

Big deal. Some of the best guys to play RT for us in recent years have either been 3rd rounders (Erik Williams), 4th rounders (Doug Free), or guys picked off the scrap heap (Colombo). There are other players we could pick at #9 who would fill a need and present better value.

Ok I don't get your "value" argument. We have a GLARING hole on the offensive line, yet you're arguing for a value pick? Such as where? CB? Peterson will be gone. Defensive line? Maybe.

But you bring up Free and Columbo as recent examples of ignoring the offensive line until later, yet working out. However, Columbo was basically a medical redshirt for a year, and Free sat on the bench for over 2 years.

We don't have that luxury anymore. We need to invest in the offensive line, and we need them to perform now. Our offensive line has held us back for the last four seasons now so we can upgrade the flashier, sexier positions. That needs to end.

I wouldn't take Carimi at #9.

Keep 1 thing in mind. Teams are not definite on playing Carimi as a LT but are more inclined to play him as a RT or flex guard.

Chances are Gabe Carimi gets drafted in the late first to early 2nd.

I have also suggested that Carolina should draft Peterson #1 overall as this draft does, but him going #1 overall weighs heavily on how the team also wants to build it's defense.

At our spot that is very much the case, especially because we don't require a QB (thank God we don't because these QB's have a lot of gray area's in their games), WR and there's no legit top 10 tackle in this draft.

Not to mention, our defense is the biggest overall problem of why we are not winning enough games.

I know our o-line is very important so we can keep #9 upright and to create an actual running game, but the defense is the most glaring issue throughout this team.

Because you don't draft players in top ten overall who will ONLY be right tackles in the NFL. Looking to the future has to be a consideration as well.

Again, why? You haven't outlined why in terms that make any sense.

Look at the Patriots with their selection of Mankins. Worked out pretty well, wouldn't you say?

Same thing I'm saying.

Honestly, if I'm Dallas, I trade down and try and get Carimi in the middle of the 1st, and then I would seriously draft Deunta Williams in the late 1st or early 2nd.

I tried to explain about flexibility. At least Mankins was drafted in the late 1st, I believe the last pick in the 1st round? Plus Mankins can play either guard position, and scouts and Mayock say that Carimi is strictly a right tackle at the NFL level. Why would we invest millions of dollars in a position where it's important to be versatile?
