This is very likely.
Payne's agent drops Cowboys name and gets a bigger offer, a la Randy Gregory.

But I am not ruling it 100% out as Micah knew what he was doing when he said they need Payne.
No one talks to Dan Quinn more.
And Jerry is very likely to give Dan what he wants given he has stayed 2 years in a row to do a master DC job where he could have gotten a HC job.

I don't know how accurate this site is but I doubt it happens. I'm not gonna do the woe is us thing about how we don't sign free agents, I'm just predicting that Payne gets the franchise tag.

I think with the sale of the team happening, there is a possibility, but from what I'm hearing in the DC area, there will likely be a directive that the front office can only commit so much in future salaries. So any hope Commanders fans have that they'll sign him or a QB long term is wasted.

But with the franchise tag, no money is due until week 1 and considering salary floors, there isn't much of a reason to not tag him

Hard to imagine he is not tagged.
If not, hard to imagine Stephen paying out 20 mill a year for a free agent, let alone a DT,
A position this front office has never made a priority.

They did draft his replacement last yr and signed Ridgeway away from us, so there is a possible chance he could hit the open market. Also, they just gave Allen a huge extension, not sure they want to tie up so much money at 1 position.

Not so fast.........couple of reasons

• Johnathan Allen, their OTHER DT and team leader, was extended last year at $18-19M per
• Chase Young's 5th-year option in May

Thats all you need to know to know Payne isnt coming back. Now will they franchise him and try to trade him? That might be a smart play. But I see no way they are resigning him.

A FA like Payne Jerry should jump at. Our #1 need on the football team and this would all but complete a top 3 defense for the next 3 or 4 years.

Not even close.........think about it. If they are not willing to invest a high draft pick in the position ( knowing it's cheap ), what are the odds of paying a player not named A Donald, $18-19M? I'd say pretty close to zero.......

I know they are talking about an extension, but the tag is 19M. If they are unable to sign him prior to fa, I bet they don't tag him and allow him to test the market.

Just speculation, but heard McClay say he is on our fa radar after the season, Parsons also pushing for the signing. My guess is, they don't get into a bidding war, but they might spend more in fa this yr.
