There is one other consideration. Remember the reports early in the season that Allen and Payne almost came to blows in the locker room. It was reported the two don't get along. I don't know if they ironed it all out or not but maybe the Commanders want to move Payne to eliminate the locker room issues.

Even so, I am still not sure I want to pay Payne $20 million or more when I can sign Tomlinson and Hankins for less. Together they would make a formidable interior DL, with Osa and either Gallimore or Bohanna backing them up.

Just speculation, but heard McClay say he is on our fa radar after the season, Parsons also pushing for the signing. My guess is, they don't get into a bidding war, but they might spend more in fa this yr.
Cowboys are VERY desperate at the DT position right now. Osa is the ONLY guy young that is any good at the position. We basically have Osa and no one. If they are EVER going to do it, this would be the year.

I don't know how accurate this site is but I doubt it happens. I'm not gonna do the woe is us thing about how we don't sign free agents, I'm just predicting that Payne gets the franchise tag.

I think with the sale of the team happening, there is a possibility, but from what I'm hearing in the DC area, there will likely be a directive that the front office can only commit so much in future salaries. So any hope Commanders fans have that they'll sign him or a QB long term is wasted.

But with the franchise tag, no money is due until week 1 and considering salary floors, there isn't much of a reason to not tag him
If the Commodes tag him, that will be over 40M paid to DTs in 2023.

They drafted a DT in the 2nd round of the 2022 draft.

They stole the greatest 5th round pick in NFL history from the Cowboys, DT John Ridgeway.
(greatest per @America's Cowboy)

I dont know who started this Payne nonsense but to even think Jerry will even entertain this laughable.

I agree, but also could see them signing Hankins and another similar type. I am hoping they sign legitimate starters at NT/WR in fa this offseason, but have to see it to believe it.

Pretty much where I am.........but if I'm spending $18-20M in the position, give me Hargrave over Payne for more consistency. Payne's sack total jumped from 4.5 in 2021 to 11 this season, a contract year.

Jerry will have Payne and his agent flown in for one day of negotiations.
Payne leaves and hops on the next flight to Tampa Bay. Signs the same day.
Jerry releases a press statement saying they made him an honest offer.

They did draft his replacement last yr and signed Ridgeway away from us, so there is a possible chance he could hit the open market. Also, they just gave Allen a huge extension, not sure they want to tie up so much money at 1 position.
He could hit the open market and be on the Yacht with the Jones boys during the first week of free agency and they still wouldn't sign him. His market value is 20M. There's a missing decimal in between the numbers.

Dalvin Tomlinson is a more realistic target, IMO.
Tomlinson a realistic signing for the Cowboys ? A pure 1 tech ?
With their ever- stubborn low regards philosophy on 1 techs ?

- Plus i see them more re-signing Hankins to a low tier, 2 year contract instead of seeking more established 1 techs on the vet FA market..

- And has the team given up on Bohanna to seek out another new, developmental John Ridgeway type in the later rounds again?

The Cowboys aren't likely to pay what the Commanders would ask for him, even if they were to consider it. They wouldn't send him to the Cowboys, knowing that he would cause them problems. Let's just say they aren't likely to part with him to start with. They'll just tag him.
