NFL Network. What 3 players would you keep?

They were doing an interesting exercise on NFLN (I believe it was Good Morning Football). They are deciding which 3 players, if you could only pick 3, would you have to keep (or protect) if the NFL were to have an expansion draft.

I'm only listening to the show via radio while I am at work, so I don't know if they got to the Cowboys or not, but it got me thinking about it.

This was a lot harder than i thought, but I ended up choosing the following players:

T. Smith - best LT in football, best OL in football. This guy is sculpted to play football and I need him on my team.

Z. Martin - Best guard in football, simply dominant!

D. Prescott - Yeah I believe in this kid (enough to leave Frederick unprotected). He showed me enough physically and, most importantly, mentally to lock him up.

Leaving Zeke unprotected wasn't easy because I think he is a special talent, but at the end of the day I believe he is easier to replace than any of the players i chose.

The only players on defense that I even gave any consideration were Maliek Collins and Sean Lee, in that order. I believe Collins is going to be a dominant force and Lee has proven he can be. However, Collins has to show this year that he has taken that next step and Lee has had his struggles staying on the field and is slightly older than the others.

Who would you select and why?

Dak
Tyron
Fredrick

Fredrick is the brains and leader of the o-line. So I took him over Martin, who I love.

I like Lee, but he's getting older. I bet the team is already looking medium term to replace him. There is nobody else on defense worth taking. Jaylon is a huge ?

Tyron Smith
Zack Martin
Travis Frederick

Whether it was the Romo/Murray offense in 2014 or the Dak/Zeke show in 2016, you can change the QB/RB but this OL has been the one constant. You dominate the trenches and it makes Sundays much easier.

They were there in 2015 too during the Weeden/Cassel era.

You need the QB. If you don't have one in this league, you're dead. Ask Cleveland how hard it is to find one.

Well, you need a competent Quarterback... Cassel and Weeden obviously did not fall into that category.

There are about 20-25 QBs in the league that I'd feel comfortable with.

Just because the Browns have been historically inept at finding a QB doesn't mean everyone else is equally challenged.

Again, there are 20-25 starting QBs in this league that I'd consider capable to run an efficient offense.

Dak. I too believe!

Zeke. Transcendent player.

Zack Martin. Can play more than 1 pos on the line. Best O-lineman in the NFL.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Tyron Smith is unquestioned. Then you have Martin, Frederick and Elliott. Prescott has to enter the equation because all teams will snatch a QB in a heartbeat.

So reluctantly, I would have Smith, Elliott, as I think he is a transcendent talent and Prescott, simply because getting a QB, even a half reliable one is such a chore.

I would be physically sick losing Frederick and Martin though.

This is a restrictive loaded question though. No expansion draft would only allow teams to protect three players.

The last expansion draft in 2002 had the teams only exposing five players in total.

I would ask the question what ten Cowboys would you protect if the number grew to 10. To me it is tough to see more than six-seven locks.

This is a QB driven league. Always has been. Now more than ever.

The teams perennially at the top have one (New England, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Seattle)
The teams perennially at the bottom do not (Cleveland, Jacksonville, LA Rams, Buffalo)

It doesn't mean you can ignore the rest of your team however (Indy, New Orleans).

We saw in 2015 what happens when you have a great o-line and no QB. 4-12.

I love Martin & believe he is the best OG in the league. However, Frederick is also the best at a more important position on the O-line. It takes someone who is smart, quick, & powerful to call blocking assignments, adjust to audibles, etc. Tough call, but those are the three guys I would keep. Too bad we don't have a perennial all-pro on the defense to worry about. Lee is older with bad knees. I would love to have included Zeke, but he isn't nearly as effective without an All-Pro Center. There is no clear-cut answer, though.
