Twitter: NFL/NFLPA holding mandatory teleconference; Cowboys practice pushed back

A mandatory conference about health and safety and not how they're going to fix the growing ref problem that is costing people games?

Detroit was hosed on that phantom facemask call last night.

But hey let's continue to worry about the part that you're not ever going to take out of the game, the physical risk.

Well until they put flags on these guys and I guess that's probably what they're working toward.

The facemask call wasn't phantom. In real time, it looked like a facemask.

Anyways, the rule book needs to be thrown out and replaced with something similar.

The flags are bad. The "Judgement" calls these refs are making are different for each ref.....somethimes different calls, made by the same ref in the same game.

Something is wrong; DId they not get their raises? Are they still just "part time" ? This has been the worse year I can recall...

I have to agree with the officiating. Most of the time I don't even recognize what I am watching. These officials change the outcome of pretty much every game and it's past the point of being ridiculous. That facemask call last night was atrocious and it cost the Lions the game, but that's par for the course nowadays.

These safety rules are getting out of hand as well. These men are grown and they know the risks and rewards of playing in the NFL. If they fear that they might have life altering health challenges due to football later on in life then they can can forgo the life altering money and join the rest of us in the real world and get another job.

It really is that simple.

It's gotten to where there are 3 different teams on the field..

the two opposing teams and the refs.

The refs are supposed to be more transparent to the game and be there to enforce the rules.

Not there to create another external force that alters outcomes and changes the flow of the game.

The calls anymore are so convoluted and confusing anymore and they constantly halt the games with their replays it is not hardly entertainment.

It's more like Judge Judy.

The whole sport has gotten away from the game I grew up watching and loving.

Throw in things like Deflategate and the domestic violence issues and the concussion issues and all the rest..

I'm not sure how much longer the NFL can continue to retain it's stature going forward without some changes.

Even the play before the fantom facemask, the wide receiver just grabbed the defensive back the DB to prevent interception then fell back like he was interfered with. Officiating has to become consistent, we were told that the DB interference on Dez in Tampa wasn't called because refs did not want to make game changing call on desperation throw. And once again the ref was out of position to make the call. if you see you see don't assume because it appears to have happened.

The reality is the game just moves too fast for these guys to keep up with it. In real time, I thought it was a facemask. Sure, after you slow it down, you can see it really isn't. Would paying these guys enough to be full time, allowing them to train and practice during the week, create a sufficient solution? Hard to know for sure, but I'd like to see it.

I wonder if this call is in response to what happened to Gronk last week? Wouldn't be surprised.

I still think they should use game cameras linked to a computer to call all penalties. The human element these days is woefully inefficient.

The heartbreak for the Lions fans sucks. The pass interference then no pass interference call against us last year (yes I know it really wasn't pass interference but it still hurts if you're a Lions fan) and then you have a chance to beat the team you despise the most and you lose the game because of a total BS face mask penalty and then a Miracle Hail Mary. It seemed like yesterday the Packers were destined to win that game. Fumbles bounced the right way and then obviously the end of the game.

I'm not really one to ponder "what if's" but it really is amazing to see some of the things that happen for some teams and wonder why we can't seem to get some of that magic to go our way.

I don't think I have ever seen the Cowboys involved in a sequence of events at the end of a game like the Packers just had. I mean how lucky can you be.

It was a terrible call as there was no face mask.

I don't care how people try to sugar coat it.

In real time, how could you tell?

I am no Packer fan, but when I saw it...first thing I thought was face mask. The defenders hand was in that area and Rodgers head turned like it would if he was being yanked by his face mask. When you slow it down, it looks less obvious but I agreed with the call. Only way to fix that call is add more challenges. I'm sick of challenges slowing down games myself.

I may be a lone but I miss the days of real time calls and a simpler rule book.

I bet the Lions fans were saying this exact same thing after our only playoff win last season

Officiating will always be subjective
Fans of every team feel this way
Play better and you give yourself more chances and you overcome mistakes

Run an undisciplined operation like the cowboys do and you will be crying in your drink more often than not

"The fault dear Brutus is not in our stars but in ourselves "

You have to account the tv angle we had as a viewer. That camera was far off at an angle that we saw in real time. The amount of refs right on top of the play, someone should have been able to tell.

This thread went off the rails in a hurry.

My guess is this has something to do with safety/security (not in regards to the players).

It's hard to live by your credo of playing better gives you more chances when the officiating is so atrocious.

Every team wants to play better, even the ones that have great records. These teams are so evenly matched and the games are so close that the officiating has now decided games and it's now the norm. Every team has been victim of this good and bad.

The problem is.....the ref threw the flag from behind Rogers.

Blows the real time theory right out of the water.

No way that was a legitimate flag.

He didn't have even a halfway decent vantage point yet he throws the hanky on what's nothing more than an assumption?

What was the call? Facemask or incidental?

Yeah. He blew that too.
