NFL Officiating

Okay, not just because of our game (i.e. the DLaw delay of game call), but because of the officiating in the league in general, it's time to start a thread to address how atrocious the officials are. For example, as much as I dislike the Eagles, they did get the short end of the stick on the 2 point conversion fail. I thought it was obvious that Foles had been taken down by either his facemask or his horsecollar (I thought it was the latter at first), yet, the ref who was standing RIGHT THERE never threw the flag. Of course, we had our share of dreadful calls against Tampa. All in all, the officiating has been horrendously poor. I don't know how the refs have gotten this bad, but they are worse than the replacement refs in 2012, and that's saying a lot.

I'd like for the NFL to be made quicker, but, at the same time, I hate how horrendous officiating sometimes seems to dictate the outcome of games. So, one thing that may have to happen is that penalties should be reviewable. I don't know how else the league can fix this besides the replays, but the officiating is absolutely ghastly.

If you have any ideas for how the NFL can fix the officiating, please feel free to tell us what you think, because I could see the refs being a big part of the reason that the NFL doesn't exist in the near future.

In essence, I think it's safe to say that the league has gotten completely out of sorts with the officiating. I don't know how it got this bad or how it can be fixed now, but it absolutely MUST for the sake of the league. It's pathetic to see that the games really are in the hands of the refs now.

Make every call reviewed by someone away from the game. Including penalties.

Would make the games 4 hours long, but it's got to be better than having on the field refs decide games by their sheer ineptitude..

I agree. I think having the penalties be reviewable like Canada is going to have to happen. Official ineptitude is going to kill football.

I think it would help dramatically if penalties were challengeable. I'd do something like adding 2 additional coach challenges which could only be used on penalty challenges.

I would go with this, or, each successful challenge, including those for penalties, results in that challenge being returned to the coach. In essence, each successful challenge means that challenge that was used can be used again and again until it's wrong, then the coach will have one more until he gets that one wrong as well.

I could see officiating taking the NFL out. It's become so blatant that we have to over come both the refs and opponents. The networks have brought in retired referees and sometimes they actually disagree with the call on the field. Maybe more drones on the field and GPS chips in footballs to accurately mark the chains. Opinion and bias need to be removed when possible.

That facemask was such BS. I didn’t think any call against Philly this year coulda been worse than the OPI call on Goedert against y’all or the fumble on the opening kickoff. That uncalled facemask was worse, there was no reason to NOT see that.

They have no standard, the calls are drasticly different from one crew to the next.

They call ticky tack stuff that costs teams big yards or keep drives alive on critical 3rd downs, then miss big penalties that are blatantly obvious.

By far the worse officiating of any sport. Much worse then most of the college games I watch as well.

Electronics are the only way....but I’m guessing the league doesn’t really want to fix the issue to be completely unbiased as that would disallow them from pushing results in a way they want...
