How much did the overtime rules play into JG's decision to go for it on 4th and short in FG range?

You kick the FG there and give it back to the Egirls, they know they must score on that possession, so it is four down football for them until they get into FG range, giving them an extra down to march the field and possibly get the winning TD.

Do we like the OT rules?

It played a huge part of it.
Attempt the FG and you give them a chance to win or tie it even if you make it.
The one way you end it for sure is to score a TD.

I'm sure the eagles offense was ticked. I mean, just because of coin flip, they don't even get a chance. :muttley:

I hate it. I'd rather have the college rules.

agree with you and those who think it played into Garrett's 4th & 1 go for it decision. Although these rules worked to our "benefit" (if you will) last night, I believe the current set of OT rules in the NFL are terrible. I don't think there's any place for a tie in the NFL. From a standings perspective, I see no value in having a tie in you W/L bracket. Games should go on until a definitive winner is identified

The OT rules are fine - you have 60 minutes to win the game in regulation. If you lose by giving up a touchdown on the first possession, then you weren't good enough to win.

I find OT much more tolerable with adjustment to field goals in recent years. What the Eagles offense should be salty about is the Dallas defensive adjustment to short passes and the Smallwood fumble.

One can make the argument that the other team should have a possession even if the first team scores a TD. Its a logical argument

I'm pretty indifferent about it myself.

I don't agree.

You have 60 minutes to settle matters. If you lose the coin toss, your defense has the opportunity to come up with a stop. Hell, you could even try an onside kick to steal a possession. If you can't keep the team out of the end zone, tough luck.

I think with 4th and inches and his faith in his OL that was the biggest factor. Gutsy call if Dallas fails and philly wins by a FG Garrett would be getting roasted today.

OT rules both college and NFL, one quarter for a full 15 minutes....regardless of the scoring. So teams can get 3 TD's each, then one gets a FG.
either it ends in a tie, or they play sudden death 2nd OT.

I am glad they at least did away with the FG wins it sudden death crap. I like that at least the other team gets a chance, but also they should extend it, even if a team gets a TD on their first drive, let the other team get a chance to match. And so forth, until a team is stopped. therefore creating a winner.

Again, it's an argument I've heard. I don't profess to be in favor of it.

If the NFL were to change it, I'd shrug my shoulders and move on. If they keep it the way it is, I'm good with that as well.

I'm just happy about last night win!

My issue with overtime rules is when you have two great offenses (vs maybe two marginal defenses) but only one gets a chance to win based on a coin flip.

Those are the breaks, but it is a bit weird.

If you have two balanced teams, then the rules work out ok. The game being tied reflects two well-balanced teams. Now, one go stop the other.

But the game could also be tied because of two equal offenses ----either of which would have a high chance of scoring a TD on the first possession and ending it based on winning the toss...while other offense just watches. lol

Last night was not really a good example, as both defenses had plenty of stops, so it could've gone either way.
