The majority of NFL players believe commissioner Roger Goodell is doing an above-average job leading the league, according to a poll conducted by Sports Illustrated.

Sixty-six percent of the 296 players surveyed gave Goodell grades of either 'A' or 'B.' Only three percent of the players gave Goodell an 'F.'

Players aged 21 through 24 were particularly positive, with 72 percent giving Goodell an A or a B.

Since becoming NFL commissioner in 2006, Goodell has made perhaps his most visible imprint by implementing a personal conduct policy to bring wayward players in line, on and off the field.

The survey was conducted before the start of the 2009 season. Here are the complete results:

A 20%
B 46%
C 26%
D 5%
F 3%

Wow, pretty high grades for a guy most say sucks.

I think he handled Spygate about as poorly as he could have but he's also done what players asked of him in holding people accountable.

I found it interesting how the players graded him vs what I hear from fans.

My personal view I like Goodell that does not mean I agree with everything he has done or has proposed for instance I don’t care to see teams traveling overseas and losing a home game in the process.

However on things like cracking down on problem players I applaud him and I applaud the players including Jason Witten who went to Goodell when he 1st took over about cleaning up the image of the NFL.

Many guys were sick and tired of being lumped in with thugs who were getting nothing but a slap on the wrist

If I were media and wanted to put my spin on it I might point out that over 1/3 of the players think he deserves a C or lower.

I might also point out his propensity for fining folks who speak out against some of the flaws.

Spin? 66 percent like the job he is doing I don't doubt some do not like him I'm sure Ochocinco does not like him and some other thugs in the league do not like him after all he is the one cracking down on them. Then again playing in the NFL is not a right it is a privilege and if you can't follow the rules then maybe you don't belong in the NFL.

All I'm saying is that 34% think he is doing C work or worse.

34%

If I were the subject of the poll and found that 34% of my subjects thought I wasn't getting it done I would take notice.

The players are certainly voting from a different perspective then the fans would so it's no surprise to me that the results might be different.

I'm sure that none of the players chose what they thought wished to be heard over their true feelings.

66% is decent but it certainly is not unanimous nor even close. I don't think 34% of the league are "thugs".

92% gave him a passing grade. If a C is still a passing grade. I think the players clearly have a higher regard for the job he is doing than the fans do.

Well I suppose so.

Although....

C is to passing as the Detroit Lions are to a pro team.

It is not a failing grade which only 8% gave him a failing to close to failing grade. It is what it is, I know fans have a different view than the players when it comes to Goodell

If you went to a restaurant and at the end of the meal graded it as a C would you go back?

If the doctor you are using to perform that life saving brain surgery "passed" medical school with a C average would you be comfortable in his care?

C is passing when it comes to moving those kids on through the system but it is hardly a resounding endorsement on one's job performance.

My whole point with the first post was to say that these results can be interpreted in different ways. Our back and forth kinda reinforces that idea.

It is what it is but what is it?

It is still 66% saying he is going a good job yet you make more out of the 8% that shows him failing. That is what it is, fans like to moan about Goodell the players evidently have a stronger opinion of him than the fans.

You didn't answer my questions.

You would go back to that C graded eatery?

You would be ok with that C graded doctor opening up your noggin?

I am not making more out of the 8%.

I am making more out of the over one third who gave him C or lower.

For the record. C's are for under achieving slackers or over achieving idiots.

So you could say that 34% of those polled say Goodell is either an under achieving slacker or and over achieving idiot.

Its probably just me but that really isn't a resume padding stat.

We don't know what the question the players were asked was nor do we know how the players in question were selected to poll.

If 53 of the 296 are from the Boston area for example, thats going to skew things a wee bit.

This poll is worthless.

Anyone thinking someone in that position would ever get more then 60-70% approval is just flat out dumb. So many players that have different priorities-of course you are going to get a lot of disagreement. Wonder why they did not just go APPROVE/DISAPPROVE?

I would say C means it was alright nothing special but you are taking 8 percent and actling like that is the majority the majority has given him a pass grade 8 percent gave him a D or less no matter how you spin it that is a pretty good positive vote from the player to Goodell.

Of course it is because you don't like the man.

The question asked was how they felt about the job Goodell is doing and the vast majority approve of that job.

The players were probably scared when they voted.

I'm pretty sure Goodell would have considered a poor grade to be a violation of his subjective Conduct Policy.

Why would they be scared they know they will get drug tested yet guys still get popped for getting high despite the repercussions.

Maybe because they've seen coaches get fined for the despicable offense of calling out the officials on the horrendous job they sometimes do.

Maybe because they have seen first hand the inconsistency in his rulings and don't want to put a target on their backs.
