I've seen posts on this in the past, but this was my first time actually doing it, may be good info for us out-of-staters who want to torture themselves with the Cowboys again this year.
I just called DirecTV and said I wanted to cancel my service (I pay $95 a month, have gotten Sunday Ticket every year) and they transferred me to customer retention department. There, I was offered free Sunday Ticket MAX, 3 free months of HBO/Showtime/Cinemax AND they knocked $30 off my bill, dropping it to $65 a month, all under a 1-year agreement. They tried to get me to commit for two years, but I held my ground and said I could only agree to one year (hey, I want to test the free agent market again next year).
Pretty sweet deal and I didn't even have to do any begging. Just call in and sound firm that you want to cancel, and if they ask if you are talking to other providers, say YES. I said I was looking into Time Warner because they have the Dodgers games here in Los Angeles, which DirecTV doesn't.
Note that my 2-year contract was up so I was on a month-to-month plan, not sure how well this would work if you are currently locked into an agreement, but at the very least by threatening to cancel you should at least be able to knock a few bucks off Sunday Ticket.
