I've seen posts on this in the past, but this was my first time actually doing it, may be good info for us out-of-staters who want to torture themselves with the Cowboys again this year.

I just called DirecTV and said I wanted to cancel my service (I pay $95 a month, have gotten Sunday Ticket every year) and they transferred me to customer retention department. There, I was offered free Sunday Ticket MAX, 3 free months of HBO/Showtime/Cinemax AND they knocked $30 off my bill, dropping it to $65 a month, all under a 1-year agreement. They tried to get me to commit for two years, but I held my ground and said I could only agree to one year (hey, I want to test the free agent market again next year).

Pretty sweet deal and I didn't even have to do any begging. Just call in and sound firm that you want to cancel, and if they ask if you are talking to other providers, say YES. I said I was looking into Time Warner because they have the Dodgers games here in Los Angeles, which DirecTV doesn't.

Note that my 2-year contract was up so I was on a month-to-month plan, not sure how well this would work if you are currently locked into an agreement, but at the very least by threatening to cancel you should at least be able to knock a few bucks off Sunday Ticket.

Figure I'll share my story too since I am under contract.

I'm still on contract but have been a customer for 8 years. Called and asked for a discount on the ticket as I do every year about 2 weeks ago. First rep claimed there was nothing they could do. Told him with them now selling the streaming to non customers I would do that and switch to Fios.

Got sent to retention who offered me MAxx for $150 plus $15 off for 6 months with no contract. So $60 total. With no years added to my contract. So happily took that offer.

I just called about Sunday ticket, I'm one year in on a two year contract, I told them it was too high, so he gave me $9 off a month for 6 months, told him it was still too high so he added $5 off a month for 12 months, asked if he'd throw in Max for free and he did. :)

Did the same. I have 9 months left on my original 2 year contract. I got a $25 statement credit, $15/month for 12 months discount, and $8/mo. off my Sunday Ticket payments, plus an upgrade to Max.

I'm moving to Seattle in two weeks and won't have a TV for a year. I don't know if I want to fork out the $330 (or $55 a month for 6 months) for Sunday Ticket Max so I can watch the games on my laptop. I can always pay the $30 for the NFL Rewind app and watch all the games the next day. If I go to sports bars for all 16 games, I'd probably end up spending over $330. Also, another annoying thing about Sunday Ticket is they only show the Sunday day games, so I'd still be out of luck for the Sunday night, Monday and Thursday Cowboys games. Maybe a sports bar would be worth it then.

You did better than me. I got it free with a one-year extension, discounts on Showtime and HBO, a 100 gift card, but I didn't get max.

But now that I have a one-year agreement, I will repeat this drill every year.

I was under contract as well threatened to cancel they obliged set up a cancellation date. I held firm but was gonna call the day before they came to cancel the cancellation. But they called me instead gave me the same offer as the original poster :)

My cousin wasnt so lucky. The guy called his bluff. "Im sorry to hear that sir. Well I can go ahead and disconnect your service" lol. He panicked and hung up. Called back and got a guy who took half off.

It's called CSR roulette.

I called in too. I threatened to cancel. They took $5 off a month, then $8 a month. But I tried to push for more. And that was as far as they could go. I told them to go ahead and cancel. So I'm without NFL Sunday Ticket this year. But I'm not upset. I get home later in the day anyway, and I can always find the games online.

That's the route I took prior to that $100 video game offer last year. It wasn't too bad considering that $330 is also getting you wings and beer, or whatever else.

I had Sunday Ticket Max like three years ago. I had cable at home but I had Comcast so I couldn't get Sunday Ticket. At the time, I think Sunday Ticket Max was on sale for $200 and I had a good amount of money at the time so I went for it. In the end, it definitely wasn't worth it. I lived in Miami and I believe they aired 10 or 11 games on national TV that season (including prime time games). And for the 5-6 games that weren't on TV, I ended up watching 3-4 of them at sports bars. So I ended up paying $100 per game the two times I actually used it. And my Wi-Fi at the time was crap so it was a pain to watch those two games.

Exactly the same thing happened with me. I have had DTV for 14 years and I think NFL ticket each of those years. I was going to call back and see what I can do.

Called today. First guy was a clown. He said he can only offer 8 bucks off a month and I'm like that doesn't help very much. He comes back and says you mean you can't pay a dollar a day. I was mad. Click. Called back and got a cool dude and he hooked me up. Basically to make a long story short I got Sunday ticket for 50 bucks but if you include savings over a year I got it for free as he reduced my bill by ten bucks a month. I just had to put the 50 up front.

NFL Network website used to show the live Thursday night games. not sure if they still do. Not sure if ABC or ESPN does or not.
You can always use wiziwig or firstrowsports websites for those games too.
Actually you can for everygame, just annoying sometimes on the popups, but in full screen mode, it's better.

A bit more info on the wiziwig, which seems better than firstrowsports.
On the popups, it's just ad BS. You will need to download their viewer, which I never had a problem with. But on the popup ads, they try to trick you, as you see an X to close it, but it really opens something else. However, once you figure it out, most have a faint almost hidden true X to close it. Hope you have good eyesight.

They also keep telling your to upragde to the HD version, even though you may already have it. Just nedd to exit it too. The popups come on more in regular screen, but in full screen, you can go a very long time before something comes up. Video quality has always been good. but as eveything else, it depends on your bandwidth. It will freeze at times, but so does DTV as well as my slingbox.

I don't think I've ever had any luck with these "cancel" tactics or even when I really want to cancel something. The service usually just gets canceled and I don't get offered any incentive to stay. lol

I never have either. When I called to change my service, got a rude stupid rep, ended up cancelling it. Everythime I called back to get clarification on what I wanted to really do, same thing, got people only trying to get me to sign up for a 2 year deal, they did not want to correct the original issue.
They owed me a refund of $85. took over 6 months and a lot of calls to finally get it.
Eveytime I called, they started to go through the BS sales pitch and give me the run around crap.

I was a customer from 1997 to 2013. I would love to get NFL ST back, but on my terms, as when I first called but ended up cancelling, due to the rep insulting me.
My complaints did not matter.

Same here! Whenever I have to call customer service for most services/companies, I almost always get stuck with the super rude rep that seemingly has zero interest in retaining me. Then I read all the time about people who, at the slightest threat of a cancellation, get the world offered to them. What the heck. lol
