NFL | Super Bowl ratings expected to be low
Mon, 23 Jan 2006 19:54:07 -0800

Ed Sherman, of the Chicago Tribune, reports the television ratings for Super Bowl XL are expected to be in the upper 30s, according to David Blum of Eisner Communications. Only one Super Bowl has rated lower than 40, which was in 1989 when the San Francisco 49ers blew out the Denver Broncos 55-10. The lack of a marquee player and two relatively small-market teams are the basis for the low rating.

I figured the lowest rated Super Bowl ever had to have been the Giants / Ravens. What a complete snoozefest.

Time for the league to start fixing games and putting the Cowboys on top. ;)

We'll give 'em their ratings!

Well, those guys get paid for making predictions based on something...but I'm going to disagree anyhow.

I'm going to guess that as this game draws nearer and nearer, it will be a fairly large draw, and there will be interest in the game.

Pittsburg may be a small market town, but they have a long and somewhat glorious history.

Holmgrin versus Cowher....West Coast offense versus Smash Mouth....4-3 versus 3-4. Two very good defenses.

The #1 seed in the NFC playing underdog to the #6 seed from the AFC.

The league MVP and rushing champion versus the suddenly famous Palamalu and company. The young QB and retiring HOF running back versus a top NFC defense.

I know Seattle is somewhat unknown around the country, but I think Pittsburg will draw in a lot of fans who will be pulling for them and a lot of fans who will root against them.

I think this will be a very interesting and watched SB.

Personally, if this had been the two top seeds, Indy against Seattle, I wouldn't have had any interest whatsoever other than pulling against the Colts.

I think the ratings will be down this year but it has nothing to do with the game.

Quite frankly a lot of people watch the SB for the commercials. They've been a major disappointment recently and the overblown halftime productions are also turning people off.

Throw in the fact that the game takes forever (85% of the people at my SB party have kids and leave at halftime because the next day's a school day) and you have a recipe for losing viewers' attention.

The only positive thing about the overkill that is the Super Bowl is that people can leave my house here in PA at the start of halftime and be to their homes in Florida before the second half kickoff.

Well personally, I thought it was Broncos vs Atlanta. The only SB I had to shut off in the half time and watch a movie!! I don't know how any other game can come close to it, but I Guess Ravens game did come close to it.

But I do expect this game to be kind of boring, since there is not much star power.

Worst game i remember was Commanders/Denver....Williams went crazy late in the first half and it was over....nothing worse than watching a meaningless game in which the Skins are thrashing someone.

How can this be? I mean, Troy Aikman of all people was gushing about how well pittsburgh travels. I guess ALL of their fans will be at the game...:p:

I don't see how David Blum of Eisner Communications can look 12 days into the future and come up with this conclusion. Would he had viewed it diffrently if the Bears would have made it?

Steelers have a pretty big fan base. I remember last year when they played in Dallas, there was alot of steeler fans and those stupid yellow towels at the game that day.

Teams playing at Seattle have come away saying that was one of the loudest places to have ever played at.

I think the ratings will be just fine, maybe no record by any means. But alot higher than David Blum expects them to be.

The first half of the Panthers/Pats was just tough...luckily they picked it up in the second half.

Seriously, guys, would anyone else agree that the best playoff games were the 49ers/Cowboys? I mean...who cared about the SB after those games?

As far as this game, the Steelers will win big and it will not be a low rated SB because of all the Steeler contingent. That won't stop it from being a bad game, however. Hasselbeck is going to get creamed.

Go SEAHAWKS!!!

I heard Troy say during the NFCCG that it seemed like 75% of the fans at SB XXX were Steelers fans.

Funny everybody thought the NE-Carolina SB was gonna be a snoozefest and it turned out to be one of the greatest games I've seen in awhile.

I think I'll wait for the actual to come on to decide if it sucks or not. Personally, I think it's gonna a good game. Two exciting offenses, one very good defense and one pretty good defense.

I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

I think you'd have to agree that the first half was horrible.

The second half was much better though.
