NFL Supplemental Draft 2016

Dismal?o

We've only made five picks. Steve Walsh was taken with a first rounder. We flipped that for a 1, 2, and a 3

Where is the dismal?

That was the first overall pick, not just a first

We could have had HoFers Junior Seau or Cortez Kennedy

We then traded the picks we got for Walsh move up in the much weaker 91 draft and got Russell Maryland...but we did get Erik Williams out of the deal with a 3rd round pick

Usually a non-event, but here are the eligible candidates. Draft is July 14th. Think the Cowboys will make a bid on anyone?

Eddie D’antuono, long snapper, Virginia Tech
Ra’Zahn Howard, defensive tackle, Purdue
Jalen Overstreet, running back, Sam Houston State
Tee Shepard, cornerback, Ole Miss
Rashaun Simonise, wide receiver, Calgary
Cameron Walton, defensive end, Concordia

Ummmm....no future QB....no stud pass rusher.....no LB.....nope.....no thanks

Actually, we traded up to get Rocket Ismail. We ended up with Maryland because out of nowhere, Ismail signed a mega deal to go to the CFL. Who knows what Ismail could have done in the 1991 offense. Even Alvin Harper played well in that O. Now imagine Rocket's speed on those long routes.

Any reason why a hearing aid wouldn't help with Shepard? Seems like it should -- that's what they're made for . . .

Flozell Adams had a bad ear and played very well for Dallas for a long time.

Young, Zimmerman and Reggie White were all part of the USFL dispersal draft. Dallas took the immortal Todd Fowler.

The Commanders, Browns and Saints did their homework, snagging Gary Clark, Clarence Verdin; Kevin Mack, Mike Johnson and Vaughn Johnson and Mel Gray respectively.

Mel Grey was awesome in Techmo Bowl

The supplemental pick used to select Steve Walsh ended up costing the Cowboys #1 overall pick in the 1990 draft. So basically the Cowboys traded #1 overall pick in the draft for a 1 and 3 in 92 and a 2 in 93.

Now, considering the Saints went 11-5 and 12-4 the previous years it's hard to justify giving away the #1 pick in the draft for three picks in the bottom 3rd. The most recent trade of the #1 overall netted a value that more closely resembled the Walker trade.

On the other hand, the Cowboys did benefit from other teams poor management of the supplemental draft.

Remember Clint Longley? He was the #1 overall pick in the 1974 draft as a result of being drafted by the Bengals in the 1st round of the supplemental draft.

The Bengals traded him to the Cowboys for a 5th rounder. Not only did he win that Thanksgiving game bit the Cowboys traded him to the Chargers for a 1 and 2 which they eventually packaged in a trade to the Seahawks which allowed them to draft Tony Dorsett. How is that for value?

Well teams value draft choices a bit more now.
And our GM got lucky one time with the big trade.

Perhaps....but the value of a supplemental pick cannot be determined until after the following seasons when the results determine draft order.

Its only then that the team will be.able.to determine the value of the draft pick they spent during that supplmental pick. A 1st round pick in the supplemental could cost you the 1st overall pick or the 32nd, that is a huge difference in value.

Then there is th gact that free agency didnt exist at that point, the draft was the only method to build your team.

I dont think teams value their picks more today. , I think they are more sophisticated in their evaluation and determination of proper value. I also think they areI more cautious, having learned from previous mistakes.
