NFL teams made more money but only because current contract not affected by ratings decline yet

Each of the league’s 32 teams took in $255 million in national revenues last year, which translates to $8.16 billion across the league. That’s an increase of 4.9 percent from 2016, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.

Something tells me the Cowboys domain as the most valuable franchise in sports isn't going to be in danger anytime soon.

Also, so much for the NFL is failing. Despite TV ratings being down on TV overall, they're still bringing in that cash.

Ratings fall and they just find new ways to get an influx of cash.

They could probably get a billion dollars from Epson for the exclusive rights to fax live updates.

I'd argue it's always been about entertainment, but I get your point.

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with it being about entertainment. I agree.

Winning and winning in the playoffs is the most entertaining thing of all, so even it being about entertainment still creates a strong incentive to try and win.

I hope the players union see this and get the players the money they deserve and the guaranteed contracts. That's far too much money for the players to not be getting more.

More and more people are moving away from standard TV so ratings falling are not necessarily a sign of interest waning in football.

Did the players invest the hundreds of millions to but the franchises?

No. But do you pay to watch the owners or to watch the players? They have collectedly made billions of dollars year after year and you are talking about the hundreds they invested? They invested those millions and got that money back A LONG TIME ago.

My idea of entertainment is not 4 hour long games and commercial after commercial and blown calls by the refs. I think it's only a matter of time before they start declining in revenue. I know a lot of people locally who no longer watch the NFL all day on Sunday's anymore. Like them, I am finding other things to occupy my time on Sundays. Unless the Cowboys are playing, I don't watch Thursday and Monday games either.

Ratings are falling, but that's not really an accurate assessment. I misread this last year, too.

ALL television ratings are falling. The NFL ratings are just dropping with it.

Millenniels aren't into TV. They are into their phones, social media, video games, and streaming entertainment. They watch everything on a 6-inch screen, which boggles my mind. (I'm into home theater, so I watch games on a 110-inch screen.)

There's a mad scramble going on. The under-35 crowd is cutting the cord. News channel ratings are crumbling, advertisers aren't reaching near the audience, political fundraising is becoming more pointless, movies are gravitating more toward comic-book characters. Society is dumbing-down into a me-only world. Less human interaction, less dating, fewer marriages, fewer kids.....and soon, no driving, so I guess more time to spend on the smart phone.

The NFL and television, in general, have to figure out where they will fit when their current audiences die off.

The NFL wins again! Lol.
Eh, @Nightman ?

Like I said before, drama queens.
You guys have zero ideas how contracts work......bunch of NFL cheerleaders....they can do no wrong in your loving eyes

You know that Netflix just had record revenue but missed subscriber estimates by 700k and the stock tumbled 15%+

The TV deals have been locked in for years at staggered and pre-set increases

Even GB admits it took in less money at Lambeau

The NFL can be #1 and slipping at the same time....and a 20% drop is not a death blow but it is real

But keep your pom poms dry......Goodell needs ya

And targeting that league revenue is the only overt immediate act capable of bringing it back down to Earth, in across the board equal rules& regulations enforcement& officiating:mad:
