From his original interview, it didn't really seem like he was aware of what Vick was accused of. It even sounds like he thought Vick was fighting against a dog, or he wasn't aware at the scale Vick was doing it. Either way, he will apologize for his comments and most people will forget about it.

Portis - Defends his comments by saying that there are bigger issues in the world than Vick doing what he does with his own property. Doesn't condone dog fighting,doesn't own pitts or fight pitts. States that it is unfair to go against him for something that isn't the biggest thing in the world.
Blonde Girl - What did you mean by this isn't too bad of a crime?
Portis - I mean, hunting is legal, spear fishing, it's ok to do all that. I don't think this issue is as big as the jailtime or punishmen that could happen, and to wait for the conviction. Now all of a sudden I'm condoning it and I don't own any dogs! I'm not saying its ok to fight dogs, but if you want to walk a straight line, I don't think it's OK to hunt. Portis - I think that you can't axe everyone to be perfect or walk the straight line, but when they don't they should suffer the consequences.

Portis - I didn't guarantee it, I just said that it would be disappointing not to get there. We have too much talent (names off some scrubs). If we don't take care of it this year, I think you're going to see a lot of people go and a lot of things unfold.

He was on Mike Vick's hometown news channel, where Vick is (might be was by now) a local hero, so it's not unthinkable to try to defend him. He just f-ed up and did it the wrong way.
