The NFL - The attention ***** of major league sports.
It's hard to criticize how positively it markets the game and brings attention to the game as well as generates new fans.
Once you stop trying to explore new avenues to find fans, that's when you start to go on a downhill trend for business. As somebody who has worked in the Marketing and Advertising, many companies will have ad and marketing campaigns designed where they know they will lose money on the campaign, but they set forth a break-even point to where it can be worth it they add X amount of customers.
For instance, a catalog company may feel that they can take a $15K loss by mailing out new catalogs to people they've never done business with and that is worth it if they generate 500 new customers because in the long run the amount of purchases these customers will make in their lifetime will more than offset the money they lost investing into the campaign.
I would imagine that the league sees the same thing. Hard Knocks helps out the league and the teams bring new fans and they didn't dare let it go because it's a great way to bring in new customers whose lifetime value is invaluable to the league.
