way too many get hung up on both this Value BS and Reaching BS.

If you think the guy can play and start for you then you take him when you think you can get him. No matter so called value or reach bull.

If he is indeed a player and produces for you no one will care about any of that.

Out of curiosity how do you define value? Usually on the draft board the farther down you go there are players you think can play for you but they have certain flaws that make them more risky of a pick.

There is some truth to that though. Even if a player is taken below where you valued him there is no guarantee he will contribute. Terrance Williams was a good value pick for us last year.

I see that issue as a delicate balance. If there is a player that you're completed sold on, then it's OK to draft him a little early than he's projected to be taken; however, if you consistently over-draft players then you're probably not going to be successful in the long term.

We all learned in 2009 that the Cowboys should have traded a few of the many mid to later round picks that they owned to assure themselves of getting the 1 player that was their top target, Max Under. He got pick 2 picks before theirs and the rest of the draft fell apart.

In 2013 they took Frederick a little earlier than he was projected, but it was a terrific decision. The did however, also draft for value because they had T.Williams rated higher than Escobar, but they drafted Escobar first because they were convinced that Williams would be available in the 3rd.

I hope someone other than dallas jumps the gun and picks guys like smith and lawrence before our 2nd rounder...push better guys to us....and, I have said it before, I like Chris Smith from Arkansas in the 3rd...

Rather take the higher rated DTs @ # 16 for a better impact at rushing the passer. Donald and Jernigan are legit at least one should be there.

Despite our need, I'd rather let others reach on these guys and capitalize on better players who've fallen because of it.

If guys like Smith, Attoachu, Lawrence, Crichton, etc. are all off the board by 47, we'll be pleasantly surprised by a name who is on the board.

Hopefully Ebron or Amaro!

Very true, a highly rated Safety would be a nice choice, there should be a safer pick than DE if your scenario happens.

I think we're in the most desperate need for a RDE, but I still don't want to reach for one since the best true RDE in this draft is probably a 2nd/3rd round talent. I hope we go into the draft looking at Donald/Jernigan as 1A/1B. But if someone big falls (like Lewan or Barr), then maybe you take them. I think we'll be fine. But I wouldn't reach for a DE in the 1st. I'd rather take a S or LB in the 1st.

He is a speed player, not a power player.

while very true, he still will need to get off of blocks to be successful as a pass rusher and in the run game...he would have a great teacher in marinelli

What's it going to be then, eh?

That is the one area he has to get better at, getting off of blocks. It is one reason he might be better off at linebacker rather than defensive end in this system.

valid point, but the team will want him as the DE-pass rusher...he could certainly grow into it, but if we (the fans) expect a 10 sack season in 2014, I would think we will be disappointed...but, you never know...his talent is not in question
