NFLN: Eagles Were After Free

Because I don't think that compensation picks are part of the CBA? I think you're thought process is in beta.

Who gets compensated is part of the CBA. A collective bargaining agreement most certainly specifies who is an RFA and who is a UFA. Duh.

There will still be compensatory picks for those that lose more free agents than they sign along with however much they are paid.

I don't think he was talking about surrendering picks for signing an RFA, I think he was talking about the compensatory picks awarded by the NFL for losing UFAs.

Just heard the Eagles were "really strongly after Doug Free last night".

Thankfully they lost out.
And from what I heard Tampa Bay also was going after Free pretty hard too.

Any if all Cowboys fans should've known that Free wasn't going anywhere.

lets be honest here. If someone had offered him $10 million a year for 6 years with $30 million guaranteed do you think he would have passed that up to stay here?

it is not official until Friday right? Adam Shcefter did reprot that teams can come in take FA away until they sign on the dotted line. He compared it college recuirts who give verbal committments but until they are sign to that school, they can go to other schools. I am pretty sure that Free won't go back on his word though.
I don't remember hearing Schefter, making any comments like that once they agree to a deal that's it no other team can come in and make a higher offer after that player signed a new contract.

The surest way to be proven wrong is to say "that will never happen."

If the Eagles had been willing to pay top LT money to Free, do you really think he would have turned it down? 2-3 million a year MORE and maybe a longer contract as well?
I doubt the Eagles would've forked that type of money to get Free after all they have their own people to deal with like DeSean Jackson they need to pay the man because he played well beyond his contract but knowing the Eagles that will be easier said than done.

I wouldn't if I was Free but again we're talking about the penny pinching Eagles front office here.

What to me is interesting was all those bird brain fans boasting about how good a LT was in Peters. How he was going to own Deware.

That isn't true

Jerry would have matched anything they offered and even if Jerry didn't, he would have gotten a 1st and 3rd out of the deal. Nobody was going to pay Free $8/year + a 1st and 3rd.

Free was tendered with a 1 & 3 compensation, but when the new CBA defined UFA as 4+ years, that tender went away. Had someone signed him, we would've gotten nothing

what about compensation picks? kinda a bad consolation prize, but i wonder how that works now.

AsthmaField;4009190 said:
Wiped out by the new CBA. We would have got zero had Free signed elsewhere.

nyc;4009205 said:
I have my doubts about that. I doubt that has anything to do with the CBA at all.

AbeBeta;4009241 said:
It has everything to do with the CBA -- Just admit you were uninformed and move on
Sounds like the conversation moved to talks of compensatory picks to me, and you just missed it.

I remember that and Peters is a good LT but the Cowboys didn't allow any team to sign away Free and that's a good thing.

did you even read what I posted?

that's where my discussion with NYC started - his comment about the picks not being part of the CBA were directly related to the issue of the tender picks. He switched the issue mid stream to try to get some cover for his error.

I interpreted his post that I quoted to be talking about NFL-rewarded compensatory picks. Up to that point, he was talking about picks surrendered after signing an RFA, but I think he switched gears. After that, your "discussion" with him was just a bunch of sniping back and forth with nothing really being said.

Whatever, though. I was just trying to clear up what looks like a misunderstanding between you two.

dude - he said first and third, it is obvious that is what he was talking about -- then he got all pissy b/c he was wrong.

I thought that I heard this on Monday on ESPN but I could be wrong. I thought that he also said that many of the teams including people in the NFL office don't understand fully the new rules with this CBA. Some teams got a jump on UFA on Monday while other teams did not contact anybody because of they did not want to tamper.

Of course he wouldn't, but you are the only one throwing that kind of money around.:D
