The problem is I fell asleep and don't remember three of them...

Mike Jones - Stl DB

Percy Howard - 'Boys WR

Ickey Woods - Cincy RB

Larry Brown - 'Boys DB

Clint Longley - 'Boys QB

Tommy Maddox - QB - What was funny is they showed him that whereever Dan Reeves was where Tommy Maddox ended up after he got cut from Denver.

Timmy Smith - Skins RB

I don't agree with Larry Brown. He was never great, but he was solid for the Boys during their three SB victories. He had that one shining moment in the SB against Pittsburgh that made the Raiders over pay to get him, but in the previous 4 seasons he played well for Dallas.

Right on the money. He was an above average corner for a sustained period. Really just shows how little the author knows about football to put him in that category.

Longlely pretty much qualifies. Brown does not. Percy Howard- so he caught ONE TD pass in a SB. Does not make him a hit. Icky Woods got injured- so that to me is a big difference. Players that get injured and have a short career should not be put in that category. You could put Gale Sayers there, in that case.

He was not a one-shot wonder either. He had a very solid career for us.

If Percy could have come down with that second TD and won the game, then he would be more qualified.

The reasoning behind Percy Howard was because he caught the one pass against Mel Blount. And the fact, he talked trash to Mel before asking Staubach to throw to him.

As for Clint Longley, the funniest part was the quote from Blaine Nye - "It was the triumph of the uncluttered mind."

Larry Brown being on the list was solely because of his SB performance. They said, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

If anyone sees these, these are some of the funniest things to watch because of some of the sideline footage. They showed Deion telling Brown, he would buy him something (I forget what) if he got another INT.

I watched this last night, pretty good stuff actually (even though I didn't necessarily agree with some of the folks on the list). The point on Larry Brown that put him in this categroy was the fact that he was considered pedestrian around the league until the Superbowl, then became a very big deal after that game and signed a upper-echelon contract with the Raiders due to that one game. The point was that Larry Brown turned that one game into big money and never lived up to the perceived "upper-echelon" status that the Superbowl and the contract with the Raiders put him in.

Hey since you watched it, do you know who the other three who were on that list?

Just because he got a big contract out of it means nothing. To me, if Brown had been like, say, Pete Hunter- and did the same thing- and never did anything again- THAT would be a qualifier. that is why Longley makes it- he had that one great game- and nothing else ever again. He also had done nothing before. Brown was a STARTING player on the team that had already won a couple of SBs.

Sorry for the delay (stupid conference calls!)

Two that readily come to mind are:

Greg Cook - A QB for the Bengals who won AFL rookie of the year in 69 even though he tore his rotator cuff mid-season and played through it. After surgery, he never regained form and was out of the league after 1972. Bill Walsh (who was an assistant coach with the Bengals in 1969), said he could have been better than Montana.

Jack Squirek - Raider LB, made famous for his interception against the Commanders in Superbowl XVIII. Celebrated play, very pedestrian career

Can't remember who the last one was.

He had a big game and got a fat contract, but never lived up to his contract. Plus he went on to play for the Commanders. :bang2:

It was a subjective list based on the opinions of Sports Writers (It included interviews of Spags for the Dallas players). All I can tell you is that they didn't seem to share your assessment. I didn't take it as offensive, it was actually a pretty good way to waste an hour. :)

It really is. The people they define in the top 10 always seem to have some questionable folks on the list. OTOH, the footage they provide and the interviews make up for some of the weird selections.

Ickey Woods interview was funny. Saying people still ask him to do the shuffle and he says, "Man, I'm 40 years old"

BTW, thx for following up. :)

Wow, talk about fate. 1969 was the time I was just forming my allegiance to the Cowboys and I fell in love (not literally) with Greg Cook. If he hadn't flamed out, I might have been a Bengals fan for all these years. A near death experience.

I also was a big Greg Cook fan that year and was bummed when he wrecked his shoulder and pretty much ended his career. He played on a very poor Bengals team (4-9-1) but they were on the rise and would be good for a long time to come under Paul Brown and the HCs who followed him as he really built that team from nothing.

That 1969 Bengals team has to hold the record as the youngest ever with not a single player of 30 or older on the roster! And only 3 guys who were 29, one of whom was a kicker.

Cook played a couple more seasons but only played in one more game (in 1973, he threw 3 passes and completed 1) as he never fully recovered from the shoulder injury and kept hurting it.

Truly a sad end to a very promising career.

It was also sad because it was really the tail end of Paul Brown era. He was so innovative and changed the NFL.

I think it goes:

Nate: "Thats how we play Larry with confidence."
Deion: "If you get another your going to run for mayor, you have to promise to give me a job before I vote for you."

something like that I think, I watched it too, but started falling asleep
