Holy mackerel that came from out of nowhere. I can't even fathom this yet. Too early. I wonder why he didn't let anyone know and why the Players Union is unprepared to name a successor? I know he was embattled and trying to hang onto his job, but it seems to me once you know you have pancreatic cancer and that there is a definite expiration date looming that you make arrangements.

I just checked every major news outlet and only NBC is reporting this. If this turns out to be untrue (I hope) I don't even know what to think about it.

REPORT: GENE UPSHAW DEAD AT 63

Posted by Mike Florio on August 21, 2008, 7:26 a.m.

A report citing unnamed sources from Clear Channel online indicates that Hall of Fame offensive lineman Gene Upshaw, the long-time Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, has died at the age of 63.

Per the report, Upshaw had been fighting pancreatic cancer.

Upshaw’s condition not been publicly known, and it’s unclear whether others at the NFLPA were aware of the illness, which is one of the most serious forms of cancer.

It’s also unknown whether the disease had developed recently, or whether Upshaw became afflicated with it months ago.

It’s a shocking development, to say the least. In recent months, Upshaw had indicated a desire to stay on the job through the completion of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, which became a focal point for the league and the union in May of this year, when owners voted to end the current CBA two years early.

Upshaw also has been criticized for his refusal to allow the NFLPA to identify his successor, out of fears that the league would then undermine him by working directly with the successor as to key terms of the CBA.

But now the NFLPA by all appearances will be thrust into disarray, with a power vacuum only two weeks from the start of the 2008 regular season.

Everyone seems to be citing the clear network. This has been a bad year for people in the spotlight.

My wifes father (before we were married) past away from the same type of cancer. He went from being a healthy man to nothing by the time he passed away. It took him in almost a year.

RIP Gene and condolences to his family

Apparently JT the Brick broke the story for FOX sports radio last night. JT is of course a huge Raider Homer.

I had no idea Gene was ill, although I suspected it at the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, where he looked like he lost significant weight and like he had aged.

My condolences to the family of Gene. He is one of the two NFL Hall of Famers from my alma mater. Rest in Peace.

I was suprised by the news this morning. While I was not a big fan of him as the Union head as a football player I think he was one of the all time best O-lineman to play the game.

Mortenson said that he had seen Upshaw recently and it didn't look good.

Said he was only very recently diagnosed, and that many people close to him were apparently unaware of the illness.

My stepfather died from pancreatic cancer also... He went into the hospital to have a stint put in near the bile duct in the summer of 2001 due to blockage, and it had failed due to cancer growth in 2002... He went back into the hospital the day before Thanksgiving in 2002 and died two months later. Pancreatic cancer is a beast.

Our family did some research and found that there was a team of 3 doctors at Baylor Medical in Dallas that had some success in treating that type of cancer, but it was too late for my stepdad by then...

RIP Gene... much prayers for the Upshaw family.

NEW YORK - Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who as union head helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63.

Upshaw's death was announced by the NFL Players Association, which he headed for a quarter century.

His outstanding 15-season playing career was entirely with the Oakland Raiders and included two Super Bowl wins and seven Pro Bowl appearances.

In 1983, he became executive director of the players' association and guided it through the 1987 strike that led to replacement football. By 1989, the players had a limited form of freedom, called Plan B, and in 1993, free agency and a salary cap were instituted.

Since then, the players have prospered so much that NFL owners recently opted out of the latest labor contract, which was negotiated two years ago by Upshaw and then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
