Time and a place for everything. Maybe some should wait before whizzing on the man...

Truly, the old-school giants of the game are leaving us. Mara, Upshaw, Schramm, Davis is getting up there [crazy or not he's one of the few remaining legends and was a hell of a coach and owner], Rozelle, Rooney, Stram, Gillman, Walsh, and Landry are all gone.

Pretty soon, none of the owners/GMs/Union guys will remember a time when the NFL wasn't making Billions a year. Especially if they don't improve the health care for the real old-timers. They need some of the oldsters around to tell them: "Hey, it wasn't always this good, and you can screw it up like MLB did with petty squabbling in a hurry."

Some reasons as to why this form of cancer is so deadly and quick to take life:

Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect and diagnose for the following reasons:
  • There aren’t any noticeable signs or symptoms in the early stages of pancreatic cancer.
  • The signs of pancreatic cancer, when present, are like the signs of many other illnesses.
  • The pancreas is hidden behind other organs such as the stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and bile ducts.
Not so unusual for someone to go so quickly...it's just too late once it's finally found.

RIP Gene.

Rest in peace. He was good Fraternity Brother,Hall of Fame and Leader outside of football. Pray for his family as he has entered the Omega chapter.

just saw him at the HOF ceremony on NFL access. He was thin as a rail- how in the world did this not get out and people not talk about it?

My dad lived with it for almost a year with a misdiagnosis of clinical depression, then died two weeks after diagnosis. It's very possible he didn't know. Once he did, it was almost certainly inoperable and untreatable, and then it's a question of choosing to die quietly, which is obviously understandable. There wasn't much of a coverup here.

This has caught me off guard. Guess sometimes you never know. Live your life the fullest and never quit. As we say in the Navy "Fairwinds and following Seas". Rest in Peace Gene
