You don't remember what la'el and his agent were saying at the time? They had let it be known that if the 2nd round passed and he hadn't been drafted he was going to refuse to report to whatever team drafted him sit out the 2015 season and he was going to redeclare for the 2016 draft. That's why nobody used a late pick on him.

His agent also said afterward that he was lying.

Sure but what's a 6th or 7th rounder worth for a potential 1st round talent?

All the teams chasing him in UDFA but wouldn't spend a 7th on him (I include Dallas in this) are weird.

Especially since Dallas had there 7th round picks.

Exactly. I'm glad it worked out for the Cowboys, but you don't just let a 1st-round talent like Collins get out of the draft.

Think of the possibilities you have with him if you draft him in the lower rounds. You don't think a team would be willing to trade for him? You'd get a higher return on your investment, especially if he were cleared of any charges.

Gigantic mistake by NFL clubs.

I think teams were worried that there might be more to the story than just police wanting to talk to him. What ever their reasoning was I'm glad it worked out for the boys

You're only as strong as your weakest link. Let's hope Free has one more good year left in him.

The combined effect of not knowing how the investigation was going to turn out combined with him and his agent blatantly telling teams not to waste a pick on him did it. As an owner I would have took his threats at face value and I wouldn't have drafted him either

I mean you say that but as soon as the draft ended his phone was blowing up in UDFA.

That doesn't indicate to me that owners/GMs were concerned about the investigation.

Udfa is a whole different ball game. Don't have to use a pick, and compensation is different.

Per CBA Article 6 Section 4b, a player doesn't sign a contract at least 30 days prior to the first game of the season the team can't be traded. A player who does not sign goes back into the draft but cannot be drafted again by the team that originally drafted him.

Thank you. But from the day drafted until the first 30 days before the first game is still a lot of time to negotiate a trade.

And Collins and his agent still get to dictate the terms of where they want to go, even with the rule.

Do you see what Collins signed for in UDFA? Unprecedented.

Yeah I did. But what I'm saying is that we found out he was cleared and we threw the house at him. It cost us no pick. During the draft it seemed like it would be wasting a pick on him because of his stance. No team was gonna take the chance that he was bluffing

Between the end of the 7th round (May 2nd) and within a few days of us his visit (may 6th...likely negotiated right after the visit) we found out he was cleared?

Despite the fact he's never been a suspect and so has never been "officially cleared" of anything?

I guess cleared isn't a good word. More like he had been questioned and he checked out good and he also took a lie detector test that said he was telling the truth
