pretty good start to the season so far.....

I am happy to see my Pens off to a fast start, 7 pts in 4 games. Thursday will be a huge test, when they play the Caps.....I hope Crosby comes back soon, as well as Malkin.

I am looking forward to one exciting regular season.

Pens vs Caps tonight.....too bad I am gonna miss it....I hope it is a good game. I hope the Pens don't get up early, only to choke in the 3rd period and lose like they seem to do quite a bit against the Caps.

It was a good game....particularly the outcome. ;)

In all seriousness, the Pens look even more dangerous than usual this year. I'm not looking forward to the return of Malkin and Crosby.

Go CAPS!

I'm liking this Matt Read kid. A lot.

For real.. he and Couturier have both looked very solid so far. Long season, lets hope their progress continues.

I never understood why we let Powe go and kept Nodl though. Nodl must have naked pictures of somebody, but i wish we had Powe back. Our checking line would be out of this world with Powe on one side and Talbot on the other. If Betts gets healthy we'll be even better.

It's funny, because I've been wondering why Nodl is still around. I just don't see the upside the coaches apparently see.

I was a little disappointed when they sent Schenn down to the Phantoms. Not that it means anything negative with his career but I really wanted to see why Hockey's Future had him ranked as the top prospect in Hockey last year. He's since slipped to 3rd.

I really think Couturier just outplayed him in TC and preseason and they are up against the wall with the cap and contract limit so i don't know if we'll see Schenn up for awhile. Im betting Couturier stays for the season.

What were your thoughts on all the offseason moves, btw?

I liked trading Carter for Voracek and the draft pick that gave us Couturier, but i wasn't a fan at all of trading Richards and letting Powe and O'Donnell get away for minimal contracts elsewhere. Powe was our best PK'er last year and lead the team in hits and was only 26 years old. He only got a 1.2 mil contract this year too, i have no idea why we couldn't give him at least that.

Still have a great team though.

one positive about the loss, the Pens still gained a point, since they forced OT late in the game.

They have earned 8 out of a possible 10 points so far this year....I really like how well they are playing. I love their depth, and Cook seems to have done a nice job of turning himself into a formidable offensive player, as opposed to someone who is considered a dirty cheapshot artist. He still has a long way to go to get rid of his dirty reputation, but so far he is off to a good start.

Oh and shoring up Kunitz for 2 more years really made me smile.

GO PENS

Yes, Let's Go Flyers, but it does not matter until May. I would like to get tickets to the Winter Classic though.

IMO, it all depends on Schenn and Couturier. If they turn out to be stars, then you'd have to say the Flyers did well. They had to get the goaltending solidified. That wouldn't have happened without those moves.

I don't know how true it is but there have been reports Richards and Carter were bad locker room influences and Richards in particular didn't get along with the head coach.

I thought the Flyers would take a step back this year going so young. But that it all could pay off a year or two later. Jagr's been productive so far but I wonder how well he'll play towards the end of the season. I could see this team struggling to score goals come playoff time.

I think one thing that hasn't gotten enough media attention is that the rule changes implemented after the great lockout of '04-'05 have dramatically improved the game. Back in the old days, it really wasn't all the uncommon to have a 3 hour, 45 minute ordeal every one in a while.

And I mean 3:45 of regulation play. Not, like, a game that went into overtime.

I guess ultimately not a whole heck of a lot of people care since it is hockey. But baseball would do very well for themselves to look at making some similar changes.

From everything i've read from teammates and coaches and Homer, no one has ever had anything but good things to say about Richie though. I really do believe it was just a perception that he was a bad guy that the Philly media put out there because he didn't wana deal with their BS from time to time. They pretty much ran the guy out of town imo, and they can all go die for all i care. Worthless and pathetic the way they treated the guy. I have yet to hear one person anywhere in the league say he's anything but a great player, a great leader, and a hard worker.

As for Carter, im glad we got rid of him. Always striked me as the opposite of Richie on the ice. Just lazy and not committed. He could score 50 goals a year easy with the talent he has, but he just never acted like he gave a crap. I was glad to see him go. But losing quality young players like Richie and Powe hurt me a little.

I agree we needed a goaltender..and im glad we got Bryz, but 9 years is a bit much when you have a budding superstar already on the roster who's only 22.

Idk.. i think if we win a stanley cup no one will question these moves in the long run, but if we don't you have to wonder just what the hell Homer was thinking. Richie was only 25 and locked up to 5 mil a year for the rest of his career, and he's a superstar. That's more than good value. Powe was our best PK'er and only 26 and only got 1.2 mil in the FA market, yet we couldn't keep him either. Lot of value got away.. though i do like the new blood so far.

Read, Couturier, and Simmonds all seem like they're going to be quality players for a long time.

Schenn and Voracek are kind of wild cards yet, but i have high hopes.

No matter what though, this team will miss Richie and not only his leadership and hard work, but his ability and consistently high point totals year in and year out. I think he got an extremely raw deal.. and i hope he blossoms out in LA and whips our *** everytime LA plays us (except in the postseason :D )

Honestly Rogah, I never really noticed, because, up until a few years ago, televised hockey games were sparse down here in San Antonio, and since the Pens were not that good during the first part of the 2000s, they were almost never on TV, unless Mario was making a comeback or something.

but, I can say one thing I remember.....the games were sluggish back in the day, well except for a handful of players. Everyone else seemed to be stuck in cement.

today's game seems to be much more fluid. The players seem more athletic and agile. It seems that the league has replaced many of the plodders with guys who can light it up on the scoreboard.

i think it also helped that they changed the way defenders can defend. They opened the game up to be a more offense-oriented game. I like the change. It is something that hockey desperately needed. it reminds me of how the NBA changed the defensive rules to allow for a more offense-driven game back in the mid-late 90s. Imagine how great the Dream Teamers would have been if the handcheck rules were in place when they played.....conversely, would Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, etc. be as effective if they still had the same rules from 10 years ago, the ones that let the defenders maul at will?

Not really. We got smoked.

Homer: (20 beers in) "You know what? I've got a great idea! We're undefeated, this is our best start to a season in 20 years, chemistry is great, all the lines are gelling..

LETS CHANGE EVERYTHING!"
