I don't know if this is what the op meant, but I think a lot of young players pigeon hole themselves into the role of an enforcer in order to earn their spot on a team. As a result, they might not develop into great hockey players, regardless of how much talent they have.
 
That's a good point too future but I was talking about how the nerves and pressure of fighting can cause mental stress for younger players who can't handle it. It's hockey, not boxing. If you have two goons willing to drop the gloves, fine, but if an important player goes down from a broken knuckle or hand from a fight, that's good for no one
