with the addition of Demarcus Lawrence, Ben Gardner, Ken Bishop, Davon Coleman and Chris Whaley as well as Cesar Rayford who came late last season to the Cowboys I think there are some good prospects in this group. Not claiming any of them as some savior but I think there is some good talent in this group and really look forward to seeing them this training camp and this coming season.

I'm with you on that. I think 2014 will be some growing pains since they are rookies, but I think we see a big jump in 2015. Bummer that Whaley looks to be IR'd this year with his torn ACL.

Good young talent to build on.

Yes they will have some rookie mistakes but I think they have a darn good DC who can get these guys hustling and producing for the team. Not expecting the greatness from them this season but hard work and hustle can go a long way in making a positive impact.

It sure will create some camp competition which has been something we been lacking for quite some time. Which in turn makes them better to compete.
Not that they will be all pro right away, but creates interest more than it has been.

I think it's still a fairly pedestrian group. The good news is, we're deep in terms of pedestrians, and they ought to collectively play better than the guys we had to trot out last season.

I still don't see a lot of playmakers on that side of the ball, unfortunately. We might get some plays, if guys like Melton, Crawford, Lawrence, Wilcox, Claiborne, or Carter can step up. Each of those guys has the potential to be good. I do think we'll be more consistent. And I'm very curious to see whether or not we can continue with the positive turnover trend. That alone can more or break the postseason for Dallas next year.

The new defensive front will be facing off against five of the top eleven rushers in the league from last year in Frank Gore, Marshawn Lynch and Matt Forte--along with LeSean McCoy and Alfred Morris. A good indication of where the DL will have progressed or regressed may be according to how well it contains this group of running backs as a whole.

For the defensive line to be better than average this year...

1. Melton needs to return to his 2012 form.

2. Lawrence needs to establish himself as a threat off the edge. Last season Ware was creating a sack/QBhit/pressure every 13.5 snaps. If Lawrence could do that every 16 snaps... Well we're on to something.

3. The #1 technique DT needs to command double blocking and not be pushed into the linebackers. This is huge and probably unappreciated by many. If you want the linebackers to play better, then this needs to happen.

Why wouldn't it be exciting? We hit on late rounds and udfa every year. And anything is better than what we were trotting out there last year. Why start out the year with such pessimism?

Indeed there are lots of prospects. Are they good prospects or bad prospects? The answer is nobody has a clue.

We are going into 2014 with nothing but question marks on the d-line. We either have guys who have never played in the NFL, experienced guys coming back from serious injuries or guys we picked up from the car wash last year.

I'm sure a few of these guys will play well, some others won't. But as of today, there is nothing definitive one can say about the d-line.

I blame Jerry Jones for being a hillbilly or Tony Romo being a big, old fatty. The reasons are interchangeable.

And who in here will allow them to make rookie mistakes? My goodness, we won't even allow a quarterback to throw an interception or errant pass with pass defenders in his face and the O-line in his lap.

That is true we have a lot of young men coming in and will be working with one of the best DC in the game.

It will be the same following every draft, I imagine. I will always be eager to see what the new talent has to offer, but I'm not getting my hopes up. It will take a combination of these guys to replace both Hatcher and Ware's production. And considering their production yielded less than stellar results, we have to hope they can actually improve on that production which is pretty ridiculous to hope for from this crop of rookies.
