Mallet was a rookie this season , not that it matters . I understand your point of view on this . I disagree with some points and agree with others . I do think a young QB will maintain and maybe increase his trade value for a team that has been unable to obtain a QB . Kolb comes to mind . The Cards have trouble with the QB position and were looking for a young replacement and the Eagles had their backup QB that produced good trade value . Dallas is in the position that Kitna's replacement has to be found . If a quality prospect drops at the QB position , it would be considered addressing a need . A young QB could come in , fill a need and mature . If Romo gets hurt , Dallas has a quality playerRandy White;4374092 said:That theory has, pretty much, disappeared with the new collective bargaining agreement. The perfect example of that are the Green Bay Packers. They have the hottest non starting QB on their roster ( Matt Flynn ) and they're going to lose him for next to nothing. At best they'll get a comp pick in the 2013 draft.
Players become unrestricted free agents after 4 years now as oppossed to 5 years in the past. What that means is that teams have less time to develop a position for future value. That back up QB needs to be NFL ready by the beginning of the 3rd season ( if you want to trade him ), which means a team has 2 full years to develop him, and that's not going to happen unless your starter goes down within that time frame.
Essentially, if a team like the Cowboys with an established Pro Bowl caliber QB, drafts a QB in the 2nd round, they just spent a 2nd round pick on a player who most likely won't see the field, and if/when he does and shines ( best case scenario ), he'll be gone after the 4th season with nothing to show for because you can bet paying the 20 million dollars that would cost to franchise him is not practical.

to step in and play . At the three year mark , a determination can be made that this QB will replace Romo or not . If not , shop for the trade . As long as the QB position is considered the most important , you will find trade partners . I don't think Romo has over 4 or 5 years left . Maybe less if the line is not fixed . Drafting a QB will increase the chances of finding a quality replacement . This is just one option of many . For the record , Dallas should have took a chance on Mallet last year IMO .
Mostly they felt he was going to be very good.jnday;4374260 said:What was the reason for the Cowboys wanting Dalton last year in the second ? Do you think Romo can or will play past age 35 ? Just asking . I like to hear all points of view .
