Nick Foles (QB) - Second round steal?

There's a lot of truth to that.

But there's also a lot of truth to the Cowboys being behind the 8-ball this season by not having a normal offseason. New coach, new defensive coordinator. Giants, NE, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, GB, NO... the staffs were established and the systems in place.

Yeah, it's an excuse, but one that has merit in my opinion.

Anywho, look at NE having to put WR's in the secondary... Look at the problems Pitt had along their offensive & defensive lines. A lot teams faced issues with a lack of talent up & down their rosters, but those teams made the playoffs. I think a stable system on both sides of the ball helped those teams smooth over some of their weak spots.

I expect better things out of Dallas come 2012.

Great post . With the QB position being the most impotant position in the NFL, drafting one should not be a problem at all . If this o line doesn't get fixed , Romo can't last . You can always get good trade value at the position as well .

That theory has, pretty much, disappeared with the new collective bargaining agreement. The perfect example of that are the Green Bay Packers. They have the hottest non starting QB on their roster ( Matt Flynn ) and they're going to lose him for next to nothing. At best they'll get a comp pick in the 2013 draft.

Players become unrestricted free agents after 4 years now as oppossed to 5 years in the past. What that means is that teams have less time to develop a position for future value. That back up QB needs to be NFL ready by the beginning of the 3rd season ( if you want to trade him ), which means a team has 2 full years to develop him, and that's not going to happen unless your starter goes down within that time frame.

Essentially, if a team like the Cowboys with an established Pro Bowl caliber QB, drafts a QB in the 2nd round, they just spent a 2nd round pick on a player who most likely won't see the field, and if/when he does and shines ( best case scenario ), he'll be gone after the 4th season with nothing to show for because you can bet paying the 20 million dollars that would cost to franchise him is not practical.

Mallet was a rookie this season , not that it matters . I understand your point of view on this . I disagree with some points and agree with others . I do think a young QB will maintain and maybe increase his trade value for a team that has been unable to obtain a QB . Kolb comes to mind . The Cards have trouble with the QB position and were looking for a young replacement and the Eagles had their backup QB that produced good trade value . Dallas is in the position that Kitna's replacement has to be found . If a quality prospect drops at the QB position , it would be considered addressing a need . A young QB could come in , fill a need and mature . If Romo gets hurt , Dallas has a quality player

to step in and play . At the three year mark , a determination can be made that this QB will replace Romo or not . If not , shop for the trade . As long as the QB position is considered the most important , you will find trade partners . I don't think Romo has over 4 or 5 years left . Maybe less if the line is not fixed . Drafting a QB will increase the chances of finding a quality replacement . This is just one option of many . For the record , Dallas should have took a chance on Mallet last year IMO .

It was my mistake about Mallett. For some reason I thought he was picked in the 2010 draft when he was selected this past season, which is why I removed that part of my post. The premise is still the same, though.

A couple of points:

The Beagles were able to get value for Kolb because Kolb had opportunities to showcase his talents due to injuries. Also he spent 4 full seasons with the Eagles and was still under contract for another year. Remember that he was originally their starter before he got hurt and was replaced by Vick.

That's not going to be the normal path of QBs drafted from now on or in the past year or two.

Mallett is actually a good example of that. If he doesn't play and show what he can do in the next 2 season, the Patriots aren't going to get much for him in a trade. The only way he's going to get on that field ( regular season ) is if Tom Brady gets injured. Also, the later that happens ( and they hope that it doesn't ) the chances of him walking away without the Patriots getting nothing in return increases ( ala Matt Flynn ). It's a catch 22 situation.

A young QB is not going to come in and fill the back up spot for the Cowboys. Not only the Cowboys, but in no other team either unless that young QB is being groomed to eventually take over, which will not be the situation in Dallas. The back up position is going to be taken up by a veteran who can fill in temporarily, but not long term, and young QBs straight out of college simply don't have the experience for that.

The Cowboys aren't looking for Tony Romo's replacement, period. That's not going to happen until about 2-3 years from now unless a career ending injury occurs and nobody can predict those. Cowboys fans must come to the realization that Tony Romo is and will be the starting QB of this franchise until he can physically prove he can't do it any longer and since he's just fresh out of the best year of his career and will not turn 32 until this April, it's safe to say he'll be around for at least 4 years if not longer.

What was the reason for the Cowboys wanting Dalton last year in the second ? Do you think Romo can or will play past age 35 ? Just asking . I like to hear all points of view .

Mostly they felt he was going to be very good.

And we won't have this many holes (or shouldn't at least) by the time we draft in April. A QB in round two shouldn't prevent us from competing next year.

Give me Garrard/Whitehurst/Saun Hill/Henne/Feely in free agency and draft a project QB in the 5th round or later. No need to waste an early pick when we have holes to fill.

I think it's safe to say that McGee just isn't going to be our eventual replacement for Romo. McGee is a decent back-up QB, but I think that is all he will ever be in this league.

Now that Romo will be 32 next year and has taken quite a beating over the last few years, I think it's time that the boys start looking for the next eventual starter to groom over the next few seasons.

I think the op hit the nail on the head in regard to the most underrated QB in this year's draft. Nick Foles was considered one of the best QB's in college two seasons ago and was a lock to go in the first round, and probably in the top 20.

This past season the Wildcats struggled and Foles seemed to lose a lot of the luster surrounding him. But a closer look at his stats showed he had his best statistical year yet. He completed 69% of his passes for 4334 yards and 28 TDs with a rating of 145.6.

I think drafting Nick Foles in the second round would be a great idea if he's still available when the Cowboys pick. I wouldn't be surprised though if his stock begins to skyrocket once more now that Matt Barkley and Landry Jones have decided to stay in school another season. But if he's there, I think it would be a terrific move on our part to draft an elite caliber, future franchise QB in the second round.

Best Available Player --- You are reaching by taking Foles in round 2.

Yup..

I remember they were doing the same thing in 2002 with Joey Harrington. Larry Lacewell was all but screaming to the entire world that Joey Harrington was better than even sliced bread. They weren't going to draft him ( at least I don't think they would have ), but they sure as hell were pumping him up just in case he fell to them.
