The college tee makes a world of difference, both on place kicks and kickoffs. This is why a guy like Crosby will struggle in workouts and perhaps at the NFL level.

The difference is night and day. I don't think a lot of folks understand how much so.

College football got rid of using tees on place kicks about 10 to 15 years ago.

Last year they implemented limiting the height of the tees for kick offs to 1". This is the same as used in the NFL.

They still kick off 5 yards further up the field, which leads to more touch backs, but if I recall correctly they are discussing changing that for the upcoming season.

Crosby has a strong leg. Yes, the elevation definitley helps him kick the ball deep, but he has shown a strong leg in away games as well. He has hit FGs from over 50 in a few away games including a 58 yard at sea level in Miami. That doesn't mean he has the strongest leg and last season he struggled with accuracy.

A 6th rounder is about right when drafting a kicker or punter. I forsee Dallas keeping Folk as a kick off specialist for a year or two and then cutting Gramatica.

I for one can't stand opposing teams getting the ball kicked to them at the 15 on kickoffs and returning it to the 40. I am sure we will again have a kicking coach to help Folk.

i love the draft, hate this pick

I just hate kickers in general, especially drafting them.

Dallas was second best in kick off coverage last season. They kicked it the shortest, but they kept them from big returns. The average start line was the 29 for the opposition.

Common people this was a 6th round pick for a kicker

This was not Al Davis drafting a kicker in the 1st round

If you are going to draft a kicker the 6th and 7th round is the place to draft them

it's definitely the place for drafting a kicker.

on principle alone, I don't think you should draft kickers at all though. just how I think, for some reason.

The "official" ball for the NCAA is slightly different from the "official" NFL ball, then add in the special K ball requirements and you see why it's so difficult to judge how a kicker will turn out.

Crosby struggled kicking the NFL ball at the Senior Bowl, to the point where one of the coaches was complaining that they couldn't work on kick returns because he was only getting it to the 15 or so.

Most NFL teams also prefer 2 step kickers instead of 3 step. From what little I've seen of Folk, he was using the 2 step already, something of a rarity in the NCAA.

Nice catch SS.

I called the UA football office this morning and left my cell number. I'm going to try and arrange a Q & A for the site with Folk and you can all ask him whatevere you want. I've never met the kid, but I've seen him play a lot. Best kicker I've seen since Jason Hansen was at Washington State.

Yet the kicker has been one of the most important player in the NFL SuperBowl and Playoffs many times

Scott Norwood (Giant fans should thank him) this is a classic one

Ventari in the snow after the tuck ruling in favor of NE

Vanderclank shaking it for the Colts

These are just some examples funny how we call them idiot kickers and stuff (I know I am guilty) yet the team success and failure relies so much on that leg :grrr:
