Westfalia was a camper conversion...so the one in the pic might just be a type 2

Yes, the pictured one is not a camper..that was the confusion. Tell you what, they were a lot of trouble.They had the fiber reinforced drive belt and that ****ed a lot of them.

You know what..they still made those old style bugs in Mexico and Bolivia until around 2000 or so.

I was talking about the camper van. Years ago I changed out a couple of engines (diesel) that had those belts. Word to the wise.

If those belts jump puts the Vv's right throw the pistons. End of the engine basically.

Both companies make good cars. I have owned a few VW's over the years including a Jetta. Had good luck..put a lot of miles on them...downside parts are expensive.

Exactly. My wife had Jetta and we put a lot of miles on it. Drove into the ground almost but the parts to fix it were expensive.

I travel for work often and drive every rental you can think of. Versa are criminally underpowered so take the Jetta. Truthfully, in this range, I would go with a Sentra or Elantra over the Jetta if a Civic/Corolla isn’t an option.

Any good or bad experiences with either? Were looking to buy in the next week and have found low mileage (around 20,000) used for these two vehicles in the $11k range.

Jetta is the better car but any issues you may have with the car will be more expensive.

The Versa lacks power and is less roomy.

Might I propose a 3rd option?

For your allotted budget, I would try to find a Sentra.

I bought a 2013 in Jan '15 w/ 13k miles for 12k after my car got stolen.

I just got rid of it, but I really had no complaints.

For the price point I can't think of a car that checks as many boxes.

I only got rid of it because I frequently need to transport Equipment for work

I have a used VW Touran (MPV). Wife and I test drove a lot of makes when we bought it earlier this year. The VW was by far the best. Smoother drive than the others. Great on motorways/highways - effortless even when full of people. First time we ever had a VW. Would buy again. Is slightly more expensive than Ford, GM, japanese cars etc. Parts easy to get if serviced in VW dealer.

Tell you something odd about the VW's at least the ones I owned...They have a fiber re-enforced rubber drive belt, instead of chain, It has an adjustable tensioner and this ****tty belt must be changed out every 100k km. Its not cheap and extremely dangerous if left unchanged. Word to the wise.

This. You can not work on VWs if you want to keep your warranty intact. It is a really slippery slope, depending on the dealership.
