Nitpick Thread

I agree with all your observations.

I like Tanner inside in goal line situations (tough inside runner) but is it enough to keep him on the roster when he is a liability on passing downs?

Please don't confuse Witten with nuclear physicist. :D He may be a great guy but he isn't in the NFL because of his brain -- he will make bonehead plays.

I don't know the guys IQ... Maybe he tries too hard, but for some reason he has a propensity for penalties that doesn't follow most other tightends, be it those with a lower skill level or the other top TE's in the game.

ITs not being negative, but while some teams looked better to me, Dallas had even less of excuses for their performance. I hope its not back to one week looking good and one week off. I really have high hopes for our coaches, so lets see if they turn it around for next week. Raiders played decent, but were getting away with holds, almost head turns and a few others. For where they are at vs where we should be, they played well and they played til the end.

A lot of their holds were very blatant and out in the open, very visible.

Ex. Green's out route just past the sticks (3rd quarter I think). When he makes his break, the defender has his hand hooked on the front collar of his pads. This kept Green from getting separation and aided the defenders cut momentum and he was able to deflect the pass. This was way past the " 5 yards ".

I know things get missed a lot, but this seemed to be another case of home brewed officiating (refs toning their skills I guess).

Is it me or does Tanner leave a lot of yards on the field. I see the hard running style but his vision could be better. He needs to use the cut back more and take advantage of the defenders body lean / momentum.

Yes, he was held on that play. On the pass that he "dropped" - on fourth down towards the end of the game, I believe - a defender in front of him got a hand on the ball and changed its trajectory just enough so he couldn't react fast enough to bring it in. I hope he can get to the practice squad, but there is a lot of receiver competition for the practice squad right now.

thank you for the Green example, i see what you mean.

Yes Tanner seems to leave yards, but we have to understand we dont see the field as he does, he seems to be running better this year tho. I also think Tanner feels he can muscle his way through instead of avoiding to gain another yard. Tho in my head, its better to miss the yward than give a fumble, so that might be going through his head too.

Sorry one more.

Kyle Wilber - had a couple of nice plays and a couple where he just got swallowed up. Some is technique, but I don't believe for a second that he is a quality DE. I'm not terribly worried about the strong side DE, but any nonsense about DL depth can be squashed right now.

BTW Broaddus reported in one of his reports this week (I think Thurs) that Free (yes Free, not a misprint) man handled Selvie most of practice. Doesnt bode well for Selvie.

What? Doug Free is a vet and Selvie is a rook. What did you expect?

Selvie is a 4th year guy who has been cut by two other teams including the pitiful Jaguars. Free is a bum and likely to be replace in the off season. If he gets dominated by Free he has a loooooong uphill climb.

Oh...! My mistake...I don't know what I was thinking.

My primary concern was the lack of scoring from the starting offense. They were deep within Oakland territory twice, and came away with three points. That has to change or this team will not take the next step into the playoffs.

Same ole same ole. Dominate between the 20's and cant punch it in. Being able to run should make them less predictable and red zone weapons like Escobar and Beasley should create mismatches. Notice I said should.

Exactly.

I didn't watch the game but even in the highlights on NFL.com they showed Romo taking a sack looking for the big play down field and Murray was wide open with some running room. They didn't say what the down and distance was.

Selvie got man-handled in the running game on several plays against the Ray-duhs.

That's why I was especially aggravated with the Witten hold. It set the sequence for that entire post-fumble drive.

What scare me is that these are the guys you will likely have in on a third down. Between them and Esconar/Hanna, you can't even competently max protect because they are a whiff risk. It means you have to keep WITTEN in to pass block, and thats just a waste.

No matter how much flak F. Jones got he will be missed because the dude had some wheels and he could pick up a blitz. Felix was severely underrated by the fan base here

To be fair I think free has gained his confidence back and has a very good camp. I am actually happy to hear that free is doing well because we could be set at RT for a few more years. Not sure why the sudden change in him.

1) My biggest nitpick from last night was the attempt at two screen passes, one by Romo and the other by Stephens or Tanney. Both were ridiculously pitiful attempts. I think on the first one Romo threw a horrible pass on the screen. The second one the RB (Randle?) was a good three seconds late getting out there it seemed.

Although, the OL seemed to have fared better on the screen attempts. They seemed to be in position at least. For the life of me, I just can't figure out why this team can't do screens well and hasn't for 7 years it seems.

2) Murray running out of bounds after catching a ball in the flat on 3rd down in the red zone. He came up a few yards short. OK, it is preseason so I'll give him credit for not risking injury in a meaningless game. But, come Sept, he better fight for those yards. I do NOT want to see a RB run out of bounds a few yards short of the sticks on 3rd down unless it is to stop the clock.

I think the ball was tipped on the first screen attempt... That's why it (the pass) didn't look so hot.

.

I saw this one too, and calling for hold/ pass interference but we got a fourth down,
My nitpicks are;

1. Romo abuses time the OL gives him,he had almost 5-6 secs to survey the field a few times and still took a blindside hit-coverage sack and threw a incompletion. In NFL the QB had to have the mental clock to get rid of the ball after 4secs (or so) ,his penchant for doing something out of nothing is well known but redone awareness / preseason-game( avoid hits ) , don't know if he will mature in this dept.

2. D was good , but still has no answer for pistol plays or running QBs. There was too much open in the middle of the field and if opposing offenses can exploit it consistently .

3. Of course the special teams, may be its just a blip , they need to be more consistent ,otherwise all improvements in offense and Defense will be wasted.

The redzone penalties are continuing to kill drives.
