Nnamdi and Huff

I honestly believe Newman and Jenkins can get it done. I just think that Sensabaugh needs to remain solid and we need to get a good to very good FS. Wouldn't hurt to replace Igor either, but I think that a huge payout to the CB position would do more harm than good. If we're left to believe Jenkins is a problem and Newman is the one who gets replaced, they'll just burn Jenkins over and over. I think they're both capable CB's, though and that we just need to get a little more pressure up front and have a better FS out there helping out on the deep routes.

Bad FS play with no pressure = recipe in getting burned for TD's.

who's the smartest boy in class?

I don't care what the name is but upgrading the FS (a major upgrade) is absolutely critical. I don't think adding a CB is as important.

I have an idea. Maybe those 'billboard' hunters can divert their funds and pay him.

Danny Boy or someone will fork over the $15 million + per year he is looking for. He is not as good as Deion so Jerruh will not do it.

I see Huff, don't see Nnamdi.

I agree, I dont see Jerry spending big dollars on a CB. The only way they go after a high dollar corner is if they release TNewman and I dont see that happening.

We need to at least get one. We haven't made a blockbuster free agent acquisition in ages.

Considering our recent success on "blockbuster free agent acquisitions" I would say that is a blessing in disguise...

TO was a blockbuster. eh.
Bigg Davis was pretty big (ha ha). more eh.

Here are my views on Nnamdi:

My heart says I want the Cowboys to do whatever it takes to get him in here with a Star on his helmet. He's an incredible shut-down corner and would be a huge upgrade to our secondary.

My brain tells me it's a bad move and here is why:
  • It will likely require the largest (or near largest) FA contract in NFL history to sign him
  • He will be 30 years old when the season starts
  • He already has a fair amount of mileage on him -- this will be his 9th season
  • He missed two games last year due to injury -- he had never missed more than one any year up to 2010 -- missing games to injury goes with the territory with older players
As I mentioned in another recent thread (on Cullen Jenkins), the NFL graveyard is littered with GM's who blew the bank on 30+ year old FA's where it didn't work out for various reasons -- one of the most common reasons being that the player is on the wrong side of 30.

It's for the reasons above I feel like it's a bad long term move to go after Nnamdi.

Appears probable there will be no cap this year, so with that in mind, who would you rather have covering the following 3 WRs in the 6 games we face the Eagles, Giants and Commanders - Nnamdi or Newman/Jenkins?

DeSaun Jackson

Hakeem Nicks

Santana Moss

Other notables for the 2011 season we face:

Santonio Holmes

Calvin Johnson

Brandon Marshall

Larry Fitzgerald

These guys will win games over this team if Jenkins/Newman is covering them, whereas Nnamdi has a habit of shutting them down.

He is worth the price tag.

There is a better chance Ty Law will play CB for the Cowboys this year than Nnamdi Asomugha.

Exactly, if the cowboys were one play or game away from going to the superbowl and needed someone like like Asomugha to push them over the top I'd say go for it, but we are not that team. For the Cowboy's situation, he is too old and too expensive.

Right here. Add Maclin and Steve Smith to that list as well as Stevie Johnson, Mike Williams. The way I look at it is that if we don't pay the man to come, and the Eagles or Skins do we will seriously regret it and we will see him twice a season. No thanks. If we can get him, I say we jump at that chance but I dont see it happening even if we are uncapped (see 2010).

I really hope Huff is a given because we did not address it int he draft...

I say you dump Newman and sign Nmadi and pay around 12 mill a season for 3/4 years. You ask Newman to renegotiate his salary to stay with the cowboys.

We still have to sign Doug Free, which won't be cheap and probably a safety such as Weddle or Huff.

Now why would Newman do that? Take a pay cut so that Dallas could sign his replacement? That doesn't even make an ounce of sense. Would you take a pay cut at your job so that your employer could replace you?

If it were to happen, Newman would have to think he wouldn't be picked up by anyone else.

I am all in favor of nnamdi coming to Dallas, as Jerruh saw the impact that Primetime had on Dallas and Nnamdi has close to that kind of talent. If Free can be signed and they can sign Nnamdi get er done.

When do you ever see a top two cornerback hit free agency in his prime?

Exactly!

I cannot believe there are folks saying we'd be fine with Newman and Jenkins again this year. I've had quite enough of being scared to death when watching opposing QBs drop back...particularly on 3rd and 15, 20, 25...and they still complete the pass. With the addition of Ryan as DC, we go get Huff and Nnamdi, I see us being a completely different defense. One that can hold some of the leads that our offense got us last year. I know it's a long-shot for us to get both Huff and NA, but I'm a dreamer. :)

Maybe(hopefully) at this point in his career Newman wants a SB and can hear the clock ticking.. Not saying he will, but you asked why he might.

I don't think I can stomach paying a 30 year old corner what it will take to pay Nnamdi.

Turned out ok for Green Bay with Charles Woodson... yes, I realize that contract was much smaller than what Nnamdi's will be.

Had Woodson been demanding the kind of money that Nmandi is commanding today, Woodson probably would not be in Greenbay. The Packers basically took a flyer on a guy that most thought had his best days behind him at the time...The situations are definitely different.
