Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is in the final year of his four-year contract.

Garrett
He’ll tell you he’s too consumed with today’s to-do list to spend any time thinking about his contract situation and whether he’ll get an extension.

At the same time, Garrett spends a lot of time talking about building a program and how the process of building a team with staying power takes time.

Garrett is 29-27 as a head coach and has missed the playoffs each of his three full seasons as head coach.

For now, Jerry Jones isn’t interested in committing to Garrett beyond this season.

“Well if I said that, I’d be giving him a contract and that’s not how we’re operating here,” Jones said of committing to Garrett beyond this season.

“I have in no way shut that door, but I have already decided that we were going to operate this year with his contract status the way that it is.”

If a HC isn't good at game management, what the hell is he good for? How do we excuse a HC that is so poor on game day and has yet to outcoach one of his peers in 4 years? I just can't fathom this idea that somehow this guy is building a team when we're as depth depleted as almost any team in the league. What the heck is he building anyway?

Jerry mentioned again this week both Tony and Jason as assets of the organization in discussing his own recent record as GM. I still think a Garrett extension is the most likely outcome sometime this season.

Garrett preaching more time, who would have thought...

Name me the last head coach that survived 4 straight years no playoffs?

I guess that would be good news because that would mean we are actually having a good/great season, If that isn’t happening, no way he gets an extension during the season.

And if we win 8 games or less and are out of the playoffs I think he is outta here, no way Jerry can sell Garrett to the fan base with another mediocre or bad season.

Then again, I would never bet against that happening, not with Jerry. :)

That's the thing. I don't think Jerry has to sell the fans. They'll still watch, and Jerry knows that.

I think Jason's hurdle is to not lose the team, and to not have an obviously better coaching option available. We'll see, but I really think the organization wants to retain him.

Tomlin
Payton
McCarthy
Harbaugh, either

Didn't take 4 years for any of these guys to get to the playoffs. 4/5 have won a Super Bowl. Maybe it doesn't take half a decade to start getting results, or maybe the path one coach has taken means nothing for other coaches for other teams at different points in history or in the future.

I agree with you on this, but do you really think they bring him back after a 6-10 or a 7-9 season?? I am not sure about this stat, but has there ever been any HC who got a new contract after 4 seasons without reaching the playoffs? Particularly if he was a first time HC and didn´t improve in wins and losses in any of those years?? I don't think that has ever happened and I don´t think this will be the very first time it will.

Oh I think Jerry is desperate to keep him. That's why we've had the assistant coach merry-go-round the past couple of years. If Garrett succeeds its one more thing Jerry can point at and say he won "his way" because he hand-picked and groomed Jason.

If he brings in someone like Harbaugh and the team starts winning, who do you think will get the credit?

I've said it before but I think the bottom will have to really fall out on this season, a la Wade, for Garrett not to be here next year.

Hard to say with Jerry. Honestly, I don't think that's going to enter into the decision very much. I think whatever equation he uses, it won't be a regular one.

Oh, I think Jerry would strongly consider Harbaugh were he available and if the two of them didn't have obvious obstacles to working together. I never buy into the Jerry not making moves because of his ego. His ego issues are enormous, but he makes them clear, too. If a coach agrees to live with them--like Parcells did--then Jerry's not going to worry about them getting credit later. He's going to put himself front and center in any situation, and he's the one writing the checks.

Parcells was a scam to sell a new stadium, nothing more. There was no one happier than Jerry when Bill left the building. IMO it will be a very long time until you see a coach like Parcells or Harbaugh on this team because they won't let him play with his toy the way coaches like Garrett or Wade do.

You can hear it in the way he talks about Garrett. They have a "great working relationship." "Jason really understands me and what I want to do." Most of all, he's not "walking on eggshells" like he was with Parcells.

And if Jerry doesn't make moves because of his ego, what the heck happened with Jimmy? He let a two time SB winning coach and architect of his championship team walk away for why? Lack of production?

This year is a good measuring stick of Garrett's head coaching ability.

We have a good offense and a poor defense. The players are HIS players. He has had plenty of time to mold the identity and style of the team.

If we go 10-6, it's fair to say that he did a good job. He curbed the deficiencies of the defense and amplified the strengths of the offense. If we go 5-11, then he clearly doesn't know how to handle a team. And if we go 8-8, that is likely the best we will ever do under him unless we are so incredibly stacked on both sides of the ball.
