Raiders reel in Seabass

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 16, 2010 12:01 PM ET
The Oakland Raiders have awarded the largest kicking contract in league history to one of the league's largest kickers.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Sebastian Janikowski will sign a four-year, $16 million contract, including $9 million in guaranteed money.

It's a well-deserved deal for the long-time Raider, who was arguably the league's best placekicker in 2009. Janikowski also consistently ranks among the league leaders in touchbacks. (He was ninth this year after finishing in the top two in 2007 & 2008.)

The Raiders were expected to use the transition tag on Janikowski absent a long-term deal, but that didn't prove necessary. Oakland has perhaps the best kicker-punter combination in football with Shane Lechler and the man they call Seabass.

See, guys: we can say something nice about the Raiders.

We wouldn't have signed him anyway.

I don't think so either, but some people were talking him up. Hos, I'm sure you wouldn't have wanted him at that new salary.

So that's the kind of money it takes to keep someone in Oakland? Thought it would be higher.

I actually would have like to see Janikowski in Dallas. Can kickoff and is a outstanding FG kicker, two in one. Makes sense to me.

Prediction, we will have one Kicker in 2010 and his name is David Buehler. Yes, I am saying he will earn the FG duties too.

Interesting that you believe in one years time he's going to go from being so unreliable at it in practice that they had to go outside the team and get another kicker to the guy whose going to earn it in the offseason.

I think we'll have two again and the field goal kicker will be named Nick Folk.

They might, but I don't.

I am saying it because God loves me and won't make me suffer 2 seasons in a row with 2 of these contemptible bastids on the roster.

Buehler does other things besides kick though, so surely that saves him from your scorn a little bit.

So does wearing a star. But my hypocrisy only goes so far. I still hate Kickers.
