It is nice to see Roy finaly playing again with out having to baby sit the other safety. Thanks to the early play of Pat Watkins,Roy Williams is now free! I hope Pat is not exposed and changes the game plan. Thoughts?

I think Watkins is doing a good job and should get better with experiance. I said from the get go I'm willing to live with a few rookie mistakes thus far I'm not seeing many mistakes by Watkins and your right his play allows Roy to roam around and make plays.

Exactly what we have been waiting for.

Here's to hoping that Watkins grows up fast.

In two games, Roy has 2 INTs. that's a pretty incredible pace. He only had 5 his entire rookie year. He should easily shatter that career high this year and yes I agree it will largely be due to not having to babysit the FS.

Although at some point Henry, TNew, and Watkins have to make a few INTs also...

You guys correct me if I did not hear this right but I thought BP said that Roy was much better now because HE did not have to be babysat any more and be told where to line up.

Honestly I don't know of a single pass attempted so far this season where Watkins has had primary coverage-- I'm sure my mind is slipping and there has been a couple but the kid seems to be getting some respect or just being avoided due to dumb luck.

yeah he must be doing a good job, Wash HAD to be thinking of trying to go deep after last year and they couldn't, or didn't.
Your FS is your last line of defense so if he isn't having to make all the plays, that's usually a good thing.
Also, pressure from the front 4 and 7 usually causes a few errant throws that will fall into the arms of a guy like Watkins at some point. I expect to see that a few times too during the course of the season.

Watkins was very inconspicuous in the preseason and has really been the first 2 games, so it's hard to point to anything concrete to describe the job he's doing. I do know that Brunell never really threw the ball deep Sunday, and I wonder if some of that was because Watkins had the deep receivers covered well. Obviously the pass rush was a factor - Brunell often didn't have a lot of time to look downfield.

I'm guessing since no one has mentioned him he played pretty solid...noticed him having some tackles but other than that I forgot about him...I geuss that means he did pretty well

It's a beautiful think to see our secondary come together in conjunction with our defensive line..

I liked what I saw from Watkins last night (and last week as well). He looks like he will be our starting FS fopr a long time to come. he has the size, speed, range, and instincts to play the position very well and is a better tackler than previously advertised.

IMO he was the best value pick we had in this draft.

His height is a tremendous asset also.

Quarterbacks throwing down field will have to make an accurate throw otherwise Watkins - playing deep - can outjump the receiver for the ball.

Glad we finally found someone who can free Roy to do what he does best.

I just looked at the game stats - I didn't realize how many tackles he made. I also noticed that Brunell didn't really throw deep. Obviously some of that was because of the pass rush, but I wonder if some was because Watkins had good deep coverage.

Watkins is going to very good for us as long as we don't put him in situations where he has to man up on a WR. His real strength is playing center field, making smart decisions and closing a lot of ground fast.

I think as he gains experience and learns better technique you'll see a guy develop who'll be a decent man-to-man coverage safety. Of course he'll probably have some challenges against the Santana Moss' of the world but I could seem him holding his own vs all the 6-1 to 6-5 receivers that are out there. Watkins has a very good hip turn, it's not like he's "tight" and can't turn and run. I think it's his technique that holds him back more than anything.

I hope so Mike but everything I've read so far says that's the biggest hole in his game. And having 5' of his 6'5 frame be legs, it's not going to be easy to correct IMO.

We will need his height with Plaxiglass and the G men this yr. He should provide good deep cover for us. I see Eli keep throwing it up for grabs but the G men WR's keep coming down with jump balls.

I doubt Tnew will have many since no one throws his way.
