struggled some as a senior in this area. Mistakes typically occur when he overruns the play and doesn't account for the runner's cutback agility.

Struggles laterally and loses a step in his transition due to tight hips.

Would rather go for the big hit than compete for the ball. Has just five career interceptions

Leads with his shoulder on big hits, failing to wrap up securely.





If you compare the amount of positives to the amount of negatives, it's pretty easy to see why Mays has a 1st round grade.

Mays is all straight line speed. He is the best example of those using 40 times as their top criteria screwing up by the numbers. His hips are so stiff they make a week old corpse look lively.

On TV, I live in the southern region so I see more of those teams, I can't really say how many times i've seen a certain player play but a team like USC for example i've seen Taylor Mays play quite a bit.

It's pretty amazing how you can judge a safety's play by merely watching them on TV. They are hardly in the screen-shot until the pass is in their area.

Here is the deal that most often over look. The draft is about projection. Can you project this player in your scheme. I've never seen Mays play (I must admit) but based on what I read, he is not a cover FS. But he does have some tools. Can you coach up what he has to fit your scheme. Based on what I read, I was one of the first ppl to consider a move to ILB ala Donnie Edwards for Wade. Wade says that he designs his scheme around the players strenghth, and based on what I read, what Mays does well, he does it exceptionally well.

So the question, does he project well to what Wade is trying to accomplish. Only Wade and the Scouts know for sure. If we draft him, I'm ok. If we pass I'm ok. Those guys do this for a living.

You have the right word, "project", just the wrong usage.

And taking "projects" (noun) in the first round is a mistake.

Now the above image and line is to get a lame laugh but it kind of is the problem with mays.

For those that use the excuse that they just played mays in the box, closer to the LOS and that is the reason for his lack of ints...do people using this excuse ever stop to think there might be a reason he was played that way? Think about that, if he was a great cover guy wouldn't they want the guy back and helping out the passing defense or using his great speed and athletic ability by getting ints and running them back?

The guy has unquestioned athletic ability. His speed is very impressive for a guy carrying that weight. However that is all for not if he has trouble with his hips in transition. IF they want him as a FS. Now maybe better suited as a LB with some added weight, maybe better suited in a traditional SS role.

However it would seem that most teams are going away from the traditional SS role and I have to believe that if it were 10 years ago, heck maybe even 5 years ago he would still be considered a top of the first round draft pick.

However his last season, the changing of safety roles in the nfl and his hips on tape and the combine have some people worried about his coverage skills.

Does that mean he would automatically suck in the NFL...no of course it does not mean that as an absolute. There are rarely absolutes in the draft as we have seen many times where first round picks wind up being busts and 7th round picks or UDFAs wind up being pro bowl players.

The thing is here is with our pick and wanting a FS that can cover, do we take the chance on a guy that coverage and his hips seem to be the biggest question and perceived negative?

Now I have said time and time again that he is the person I don't want us to draft as a FS with our first round pick. However I am also not one of those types that will whine and moan over and over about it if it were to happen. I would wish the best for him to make our team better. I may not like the pick but I do not find myself wanting to find glee or pat myself on the back if he struggled. Sometimes I think many on here put their own ego above wanting a player to do well and in turn helping the team do well.

Hopefully we will not draft him and we won't have to worry about that scenario coming into play.

Great. Now we're rueing guys before they're even on the team.

This is something new? People here have only been doing it since, well at least since I've been coming here and I'm sure it was going on before that.


With this said I've made it clear I'm not a fan of Mays at all but I long ago made my peace with the fact that we're likely going to draft him simply because I absolutely don't want him. It always seems to happen when i honestly, absolutely, don't want to see a guy in a Cowboys uniform they wind up in one.

It's my curse I guess.
