NO TAKERS FOR BENSON

Posted by Mike Florio on June 12, 2008, 5:54 p.m.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the running back Cedric Benson was unclaimed via waivers.

Every team had a crack at Benson, and could have made a claim for him through waivers. The team that landed him would have picked up the last two years of Benson’s contract, at $820,000 for 2008.

As it now stands, Benson is an unrestricted free agent.

He might remain on the shelf until pending legal troubles resulting from two arrests in roughly a month are resolved. Or until a team starts losing tailbacks to injury during training camp.

Regardless, it’s a stunning fall for the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft.

So much for Florio's veiled 'shot' at the Cowboys and his prediction that we would claim him.

He is going to be suspended for at least 4 games more than likely 8 considering Goodell. Pretty much his chances of playing this year are nil.

Dude has a drinking problem and its obvious. he needs to get his life in order and then make a comeback.

I don't how he can have a 'comeback' when he never showed anything the first time....

Quincy: Ok, on 2. I will hand the ball to your Cedric.
Cedric: Ok.
Quincy: On 2nd thought... fumble it and we could light up a doobie.
Cedric: Only if that comes with a beer chaser.
Quincy: Bet!

Correct me if I'm wrong but if a team had claimed him off waivers they would have accepted his contract as well... Now he's a FA a team can sign him to a 1yr deal for the league min. which is a lot better for any team interested consiidering his legal troubles... So I dont think he's not wanted just waiting for better deal for teams...

But if a team had put in a claim for him, there wouldn't be other suitors. Not that there will be. For the difference of vet min and his actual contract for 2008, if a team really wanted him, they would have claimed him already.

Like some other athletes...financial stability for life but blows it away.

On the other hand, Cedric will have time to pursue a degree at UT in Inland Navigation.

But do not be fooled.
Some fool team will pick him up by the time training camps break and he will be, after any suspension, the underachieving back elsewhere that he's been in Chicago.

Backs go down so quickly in this league. Look at how many times Ricky Williams has gotten chances. All you have to show is a slight bit of promise and you'll get on a roster at some point because so many of them get injured. Despite being a gigantic underachiever, Benson will be signed for sure. Denver perhaps? They just cut Henry...or did Shanahan learn his lesson from the Clarett drama?

One thing for sure, if I were an RB looking to salvage my career, I would be begging Denver to take me since they somehow produce a lot of successful backs in that system.

I guess with so many people now in the media, reporters now have reporters that report on what the reporter said.

I'm glad to see no team claim him. That sends a message to some of those knuckleheads it doesn't matter where you are drafted that character matters.
