I'm a fan of Dallas Cowboys. Have been for more'n 50 years. I am also a fan of...football.
Here in Tampa we of course get the Bucs every Sunday. I've become fond of them over the years. I root for them. Yes it makes me feel happy when they win. Not so happy when they lose.
Watching athletes perform at a high level is very enjoyable to me...any sport (except boxing MMA- a little TOO violent for my taste). I appreciate the mechanics of it, and yes...cheer all of them on a little bit...to amuse me.

Dallas will always be first and foremost in my heart, but dang...I need some playoffs jeeze!
Bold> It is both understandable and illustrates any two fans can either be both similar or not the same. I am a Dallas Cowboys fan also. Just reached the 50-year mark myself. Plus, I am an NFL fan.
I have watched tons of non-Cowboys NFL games. Professional football, like college and high school, is fun, competitive entertainment in my opinion. For me, 31 NFL teams are not Dallas, so I do not root for them no matter the circumstance.
I have often gotten the question, "Will you root for another team if Dallas has a playoff berth on the line?" My answer is always the same, as I have noted on the forum many times. I say no and add Dallas should always make their own destiny. It's all gravy if Dallas gets help making the postseason. Luck is a part of life as well but the team's playoff berth will happen without me needing to root for it one little bit.
In my eyes and only in my literal eyes, I am 100% a Cowboys fan. The same is true for how I feel about my high school alma mater in all sports.
That said, I label myself as a half-fan when it comes to college. I do root for both my college alma mater and LSU evenly--except whenever they meet face-to-face in any sport. Then I root for my alma mater 100%

even though I know LSU will destroy them practically every time.
In the end, it is different strokes for different folks. The thing that tends to grind my gears is whenever someone implies or straight out instructs a fellow fan must root for another team. There is no law or social norm mandating that demand. It is simply a powerless guilt trip empowered by purely unfettered, groupthink nonsense.
