Re-signing Dalton Schultz would be idiotic.

This is fan boy reaction after a big game.
I respectfully disagree.
I think signing Schultz for a top of the position contract would be idiotic, but signing him to a reasonable deal would be smart.
The cap was held back by Covid, but the new TV deal is already signed and the revenue is pouring in.
Revenue (and the cap) will be exploding in the coming years.
I saw one estimate that said the cap might hit 300 mil by 2026.
The cap in 2021 was just 182 (held back due to Covid).
A 12 mil APY deal (like Hunter Henry), equates to a 19 mil deal on a 300 cap.
Schultz is also young, so you could give him 4 years or more which helps spread that money out and keeps his first year money low.
You could give him 4-48 with a 12 mil bonus, and keep his first year cap number for next season at about 5 very easily. Again, that helps push the money into future years when the cap will be exploding, giving you more wiggle room.

The Cowboys always like to cry poor come the offseason, but we are one of the richest and most profitable franchises.
I understand the cap but there are ways to manipulate it.
Schultz, at 26, and a very good player, should be the type of player you try to keep (at a reasonable deal).
If he wants to set the bar for his position (and someone is willing to pay that), then sayonara and good luck. I hope you make the pro bowl with your new team so our comp pick is a 3rd rounder.
But Schultz at a reasonable number makes sense.

We will need to make tough decisions on 2 players who no longer play to their contracts, Tyron and Zeke.
Cutting them June 1 would open almost 25 mil in cap space, which along with some smart restructures could give us the money to keep Steele, Pollard, Schultz, Wilson and some important depth, plus address some defensive issues (like DT and CB).
If we moved Cooper because we felt he wasn't worth his contract, then we should be consistent and move on from Tyron and Zeke, and replace them in the draft. (BTW, I love both Tyron and Zeke, but paying them big money while losing important younger and more productive players is not good business).

But watch, Stephen will cry poor, we will lose 1/2 our own FA's and sign no one of note from the outside, as per usual.

If Schultz puts up two more games like this one he's going to earn a fat new contract. But he's not going get that little attention going forward. Teams have seen his work now and that will mean assigning someone to actually cover him. He can't beat coverage but if you allow him to work in zone he can eat. It's not complicated.. If teams have to assign resources to him that creates opportunities for other play makers. It's a win win..

I wouldn't touch him. Franchise year, couple of good performances. I pass.

I like Schultz and think he has done a good job for Dallas. Having said that I think Cowboys will lose Schultz in FA and will turn to Ferguson and Hendershot at TE. I don't think it will be high priority pick in the draft.
