The Cowboys have already locked up several cornerstone players with long-term deals, including quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten, tackle Flozell Adams and center Andre Gurode. They are looking to do the same with running back Marion Barber, defensive end Chris Canty, cornerback Terence Newman and linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

"We just feel like that's how we want to build going forward," Jones said. "We know we've got to keep guys like Terence Newman and a couple of other good players, like a Ware. We certainly want to keep our situation as such that we can keep these great young players together. That's where we would like to spend our resources."

Jones acknowledges that the Cowboys' strategy probably cost them a chance to add a "wow" player in free agency as owner Jerry Jones promised last month. Stephen Jones indicated that receiver Javon Walker might have fit that description but said the Cowboys weren't prepared to pay the bounty he got from Oakland, six years, $55 million, including $16 million guaranteed money.

Now can we put that phrase to rest???

do we often do that by using it? : ) kidding for the most part. i also tire of people who hear a key word or phrase and then just can't let it go. stephen jones makes a "mcfadden" comment after the cleveland trade and look what that did to so many. it got more worn out than a $5 vegas hooker.

jones makes a comment to a reporter and suddenly every parakeet out here has to mimic it and live/die by it vs. just taking it at face value.

i wish a lot of people would get off the surface level talk but that's where a lot of it stays so i'm just learning to get less involved and stay out of it cause i do tend to get irked and sarcastic to that crowd. in the end, they're just talking about what they love w/o any idea how tired the "regulars" are of hearing about it.

if my patience is low that's my problem.

but yea, i still get sick of the WOW threads.

I honestly think the only real WOW player in FA this year was Randy Moss anyway and I don't think there was ever a real shot we'd get him in the first place.

nope.

we took the homegrown route and i'm glad we did. no it's not as flashy as signing every warm body that has some form of name recognition. but it's a lot better planning. unfortunately fans are not patient and no big name means the period sucked.

Couple of points:

I just cannot see Canty among that elite group that Jerra mentioned.

Also, there were/are Wow players: Samuels, Moss and Roy Williams. And others had similar skills but not too much of a buzz (maybe bad PR agents).

WOW is overrated. This year's group of FAs were Ho Hum. Moss could have been a wow but everyone knew he would re-sign with the Pats.

Jerry made the right choice by holding back and not going after Ho Hum players.

Actually, Romo was gonig to be a "Wow" player had he become a free agent. The same can be said for Witten, Flo (like it or not) and Barber. The fact is that Dallas' free agents were among the best avaialbe in free agency and Dallas' GM (Jerrah :D ) managed to get these guys back (and Barber will happen "officially" as only a matter of time). Eventually extending T.O. and Newman, which no soubt will eventuslly happen, will add more "WOW" over time.

All in all, I'm happy with Dallas' performance in this free agency period because, in essence, they signed the best players avaialbe, kept the players they needed to keep and only lost waht was expendable. Evewn the players lost now provide an opportunity for the team to upgrade those positions.

Face it, the free agency crop was ho-hum this year and a couple of guys we may have liked went for a lot more than they should have.

And, we did a good job resigning our own guys, but I don't see why people have to spin that into being "wow" signings.

So far we added Zach Thomas and were able to keep the guys we wanted to keep in house. Period.

i think our best signings were keeping our own proven talent. far too many people seem to equate change with improvement when in fact, it's just change, outcome to be determined.

make a list of FA's, ours included - did we do well?

damn straight.

but the IGS needs new names and new blood to equate to solid action.

That's fine, but we still need 2 running backs, a 3rd corner and a #2 wide receiver. Hard to imagine we can get all of that in the draft.

hard to imagine the draft is all that's left.

all teams still have to draft say - 7 players on average. will all 7 make it? if they do, what happens to their 7?

there's a lot of churning to happen between now and our next game. we don't have to spend our fortune on FA, the draft or other. just a balance of what we need where we can get it and don't overpay to overstate the need.

2 running backs? no. one good one and the 3rd stringer is fine. addressed 1st or 2nd round.
3rd corner? hell, i'd even go as high as 2nd and let henry be depth now. 1st round.
wr - 1st or 2nd round.

so in the 1st 2 rounds, we get:
rb, wr, cb.

wow. the 1st 2 rounds addressed your concern and we can pick up a shiney new RB somewhere to compete with tyson thompson.

Don't know about y'all.

But if Jerry can keep Newman, Ware, Canty, and Barber long term as part of the nucleus....add that to the locked up nucleus of Witten, Romo, Ratliff, Spencer, Adams, Davis, Gurode, James, etc....

He'll have me saying "wow."

and to rate the most to least expensive as i see it:

ware
newman
barber
canty

if barber plays for 1 year and proves he's a starter, he goes up. newman we can't get too crazy about due to age but i want to pay the man fairly and keep him around.

Oh yeah, I agree completely.

I wonder what the perceived value of Barber is. I'd have to think its more than the Turner deal. Barber at least has proven he can handle 200+carries a season. Turner has yet to have a 100 carry season. Barber has been to a Pro Bowl as well.

Things could get pretty expensive pretty quickly. But we'll manage.

Perhaps I am crazy, but I wonder about the Leonard Davis deal a little bit. I know he's coming off a great year and all. But would we have been better off drafting a RG and using the cap savings to make sure we can retain Newman, Barber, and Ware? I guess it doesn't really matter now. I know they can clear up cap space with Romo, extending Owens, etc.... maybe that makes this dumb to even think about. But I don't know the salary cap stuff all that well, so I pose the question anyway.

I think we did well in signing our own guys and not getting into bidding wars for average talent. I just find it humorous some try to spin it as "wow" manuevers, when clearly that was meant as bringing in new talent.

I'm not hung up on not getting any "wow" FA's, because quite frankly there weren't any other than Moss and he wasn't really going to leave. I just hope we do well in the draft. I just don't see any reason to try and act like resigning some of our own players is the "wow" Jerry was talking about.

I don't think Jerry meant "wow" by resigning our guys either. I think he meant bringing in someone.

Never said otherwise.

I am saying I'd be "wow'ed" if we could keep all of our guys.

We just need to focus on the Draft now.

We can always pick up a another cheap RB later on in FA or after the June cuts, if necessary.

If we can come away with 1 CBs in the Draft, 1 more WR, and 1 RB who can all CONTRIBUTE, we're doing well.

Now, I'm not sure what the odds are on us hitting 3 players in the same draft. That said, we've done it before and this time we do have an extra 1st rounder.

So, out of 8 picks, can we hit on the 3 positions of "need"? It's definitely doable, but not easy.

It's probably easier to evaluate the RB position than the WR and CB position, IMO. But I do think that there are some CBs, like Cason, who are more proven and tested against top competition and who may pose less of a risk in Round 1.

As for WR, it's typically a crap shoot I suppose. But I would once again look for players with exceptional quickness in and out of cuts, good playing speed, solid hands, and the dedication to improve.
