Since when do we need prime cut ribeye at every position on the defense?

Even if we don't resign Spencer, our defense should still be better than prior year's if we do better on the injury front. A healthy Ware, Lee and Carter > Spencer. Plus, I bet after a little adjustment, Kiffin will end up being far superior to Ryan. Not resigning Spencer means being able to sign a couple lesser but better fitting talents in a 4-3 defense. They may not be better players than Spencer, but each might be as effective if they fit better. A possible 2-for-1 maybe.

Then they can go O-line in the first after they slip Jerry some sleeping pills in the Warroom on draft day.

Fully agree on all points

I would trade him for maybe a second or third round pick but keep him for less, but at this point we do not know how the D is going to fit together--I think we will be much, much improved with starters back and guys knowing what the heck they are supposed to do without pausing to think about asignments

I am curious if a Franchise-and-trade is possible. They would have to clear the cap space to Franchise him until the trade occurs.

I hate to lose a good player like AS, but he's just going to be too expensive. We missed our window.

The play of Crawford last year, though, gives me some hope. Losing Spencer, though does mean we'll need to look seriously at a first round DL for the future. If we let him walk and Ware goes down early...shudder. (knock hard on wood).

The other player we'll be getting back is Rat. He's had the last two years marred by injuries, but was playing well again in preseason. If he's able to stay on the field, even in a reduced role, he gives us another DL pressure player we could use badly.

I don't know but I suspect the impetus to sign Spencer long-term or for more money is based on the fact that we are so mediocre that even a journeyman like Spencer seems like gold

Speaking of gold, keep the gold for Romo, Dez, Lee, Ware and act sensibly with fringe players like Spencer.
