Not much from 3-techs

I decided to get ready for today's preseason game, I'd go back and watch the San Francisco game focusing on a couple of positions I had not reviewed yet.

I've only watched the first half, focusing on offense on Chaz Green to compare him to Kadeem Edwards (who didn't play in the first half.)

On defense, I focused on Datone Jones and Jihad Ward at 3-tech. What I saw there was not much. Both were in on a few run plays, but the only ones they made behind the line of scrimmage were clean-ups after someone else made the tackle. Neither got to the quarterback, either. Ward hit him once but he had already set up and delivered the pass.

The 1-techs (Woods, Price), which I had focused on previously, were much better than the 3-techs. The best that could be said about Jones and Ward is that they weren't blown off the line of scrimmage much. They just weren't able to control or beat their man.

I think Ward has significantly dropped off since OTA's with the pads coming on. I give Jones a better chance to make the team at this point, but that's just my opinion.

What did you think of your original assessment watching Green and Edwards?

Jones probably makes it at least for the first 4 games since Irving is gone. Ward is certainly on the bubble.
um Marinelli likes Ward. A lot.
he's had his eye on him for a long time I wouldn't count on him being cut any time soon

I haven't got to Edwards yet, but I posted my assessment of Green in another thread.

I agree. I can see the 3-techs being Irving and Collins with Ward and Jones not making the team.

I think they'll both make it because we'll want to try to develop Ward and we're relying on Jones right now with Irving out. They weren't bad against the run; they just weren't good, if that makes sense.

If they don't pick it up on the pass rush, though, I don't see the benefit of having either out there on passing downs.

Crawford and MCollins ought to be locking that position up
Ward too

With Irving out, I agree that our interior pass rushers should be Crawford and Collins. Unless either Ward or Jones show something over the next three games, I think it would be silly to put either out there on obvious passing downs.

I agree. Jones and Ward have been ok, but I would bet my bottom dollar Collins start at the 3, as soon as he is ready
I have also noticed Crawford bumping inside a lot with Gregory coming in during team period.

Crawford would be my 3t in passing situations

It is fine to like a player. As a coach you have to put their ability to contribute over whether you like them or not. Ward has pretty much disappeared since the pads went on, which is pretty much in line with his past NFL experience.

We left the 1-techs out there in passing situations against the 49ers, so I'm sure we just wanted to see what everyone can do. I won't be surprised if we don't see Crawford inside in this game either for the same reason. I will be surprised if he's not one of the two nickel interior pass rushers, at least until Irving returns.
